Any reason not to?

Piers,

That appears to be the wheel fitted to non airbag 993 RS.

I have it in mine, very comfortable with good location at the ten to two position.

Any reason not to???

Well, since you asked.... I considered, but never fitted this wheel on my previous airbag equipped RS, on the basis that if I removed the airbag, what if I ever needed it...they are apparently very good in an accident?

I have this wheel on the CS, which is caged (not that safe on the road), but also has 6 point harness,,,you tend not to move very far!

If the CS came with airbags, I would not remove them...each to their own [:)]

I wonder just how good a 10+ year old air bag is ? Never bothered to look into the shelf life. It might be frightening[:(]

Don't know if this is the right way of expressing it on here, but for an airbag fitted to a car, the option has to have a delta >0.

You will only find out it's true value if it is ever used. Sitting on the shelf in the garage and it is totally useless.

I would assume the first indication of airbag problems would be the airbag warning light flashing on the dash display, these things obviously have a shelf life, but I am not aware of any bulletins from Porsche insisting they are changed after a certain number of years.

On the basis that some manufacturers are keen to replace cambelts on a strict schedule, if they could justify more £$€ from the public on replacement airbags for their own safety, I am sure they would.

Anyway Piers, enough of this gloom,,,that RS wheel, really does feel good to use! [:D]

By shelf life I actually meant how long they sit on the car unused. There is a routine for checking the electronics and a visual inspection I believe. But no way of knowing how well the bag is holding up packed away inside . Looking on the net , life span appears to be between 10-15 years depending on manufacturer. I am certain they don't last forever.

Laurence, agree they don't last forever...and hopefully we will never need to use one...

Scenario,

1,,,,accident........no air bag fitted = zero benefit.

2,,, old dated airbag fitted,,,,,somewhere between 0-100% chance it goes off and provides a benefit.

The point being the probability of there some benefit above zero, by having an airbag in place is likely.

lets not dwell on this too much, empirical evidence does show the benefits of airbags in an accident. Can we dispute that?

If we were that concerned, we wouldn't even get in an old Porsche and go near a track, we would all be driving around in 5* Ncap padded cell Suv's [:(]

Thanks Guys, yep it's a tricky call and psychologically difficult to remove an airbag wheel...but how many of you guys with non-airbag wheels (money being no object) would fit an airbag wheel?!

Anyway, will the non-airbag RS wheel fit the existing boss?

Tks.

i would buy the wheel from your porsche dealer ,you will be suprised at the cheapness of it . it comes with the required boss and hub extension that is correct for the 993 rs model ,you will need also the horn push contact for the column switch/stalk assembly. I did just this a few years back for my c2coupe and fitted a 2.5ohm resistor to the airbag wiring loom to keep the warning light off and leave the passenger back operative. Nb my understanding of the warning lamp is that it indicates a fault but does not necesarilly render the system inoperative, I.E in the event of an accident the available measures will be activated if possible. alternatively you can just unplug the air bag control unit to render the whole system inoperative and keep the light off.. As has been said here it's a really nice wheel to use and i wouldn't think twice about ditching my airbags on any car.I consider my biggest saftey feature to be my own alertness and the two golden rules of the road .1Be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear and dont do anything to cause another road use to alter course or speed uneccesarily.
