fixed headlights

I can't find the old thread where someone was looking to do this, but......

How about a DIY solution!? [:D]

There's a guy down-under who's done it. There are some relatively clever points, and for the price, I guess it's gonna come out a bit cheap and home-made, but 10/10 for effort.

I'm gonna have a think about this for a while and see what I can come up with. I'm certainly sure that I can come up with something a hell of a lot tidier, and also come up with some CAD for people who want to do it themselves! [;)] Don't hold your breath waiting for me, but have a good read anyhow......

That looks reasonably neat.

I still can't see the point though. The pop up headlights are the best bit [8D]

I do love my pop up head lights but the weight saving benefits of fixed units are obvious and its a good look in its own right. As tempting as this idea is though, if I got caught trying to bake acrylic in the oven I would never hear the end of it!

I can understand it on a race car, but you really don't need to save a few pounds on a road car, or one that's used on the odd track day.

I don't think I'd have a 944 without pop up lights. It's the best bit [:D]

while i do like the pop-ups, they can be more trouble than they are worth. I also like the look of the fixed lights when done properly. A conundrum indeed!

What I like the most though, is the room you get for putting a decent sized filter on the end of a MAF kit without squashing it under the bonnet/light bracket!

I did seem to recall a while ago that someone was asking about the "rubbish" GT racing kit, and I though this was a damn good, simple, and actually relatively cheap idea for those who don't appreciate the pop-ups for "pose factor" [;)]

An angle grinder soon got me some extra air filter room behind my headlight. Once you chop off the bracket I don't know that you have much less space than you would with fixed lighting.

I don't imagine you would. I just feel loathed to cut the bracket off a perfectly good headlight. (even though everything else is modded! [:D] )

Like I say. I just can't make up my mind. nice, facroty looking, good output pop-ups, or nice, not quite so good output, but inherently neater fixed lights. decisions decisions....

For a better finish (and less hassle from the missus), it may be worth getting the lenses from GT, and making the buckets yourself. I reckon it's be about £10 for enough ally plate, £60 for the lamp units, £5 for a bit of black sticky-back plastic for the top trims, and whatever the lenses cost. Ahh, I'll think about it in the summer. It's too cold out to faff about measuring and making brckets. Now where's that angle grinder? [:D]

Thanks for the heads up Mike, well I really like it!
I'll think about having a go at this next year too [:D]
Best regards,
Peter.

I must admit that it is nice at this time of year to be able to drive all day and then have clean headlights in the evening (assuming they were clean when you put them away) . I do like the fixed ones though so might also have a play (one day)
Tony
With clear rear indicator lenses still to fit []

A 944 without Pop up Lights, that is like a Bonnie without a Clyde!
I personally love the Pop up lights I think they are awsome, and you get so many looks when in town and you either raise or lower them, I am planning to retro fit them to any car I own in the future!!!!!

How about fixed on the offside and pop-up on the near [;)]

It's a nice simple solution though. I'd only do it if I was wanting to make a GTR Le Mans replica [:-]

That's the attitude I like [:D]

is there any way of fixing the lights so you can just turn the bumper lights on without the pop ups working?

So the pop ups only come up when you are on dipped beam?

Ok here's a question for you... have any of you every had the car parked with the headlights on and actually got out to have a look at your car as the rest of the world see it with its lights up??

I did today for the first time I actually had a good look at the car and OH-MY-GOD does it look FUGLY with the lights up!!![:'(][:'(][:'(]
What were they thinking!!? you have the beautiful lines swooping down the front wing and then these... these.... "things" sticking up ina funny traingle shaped housing.. [:'(]

Side lights and foglights from now on!!! ( until i find a decent fixed unit kit )

Wait 'till you see a 968 with the lights up if you think the 944 is bad... [:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]
