Fixed: Rattle from passenger side rear

Still trying to trace rattle from rear passenger side. Have taken rear caliper and disc off.

Where the cable/mechanism comes through the backplate, should there be any play? I can move the lever arrangement quite a bit. Is this just adjustment? Where do i take up slack in cable?

Think the cable you are talking about is the handbrake it can be adjusted from the handbrake lever and within the rear wheel with the disc/drum back in place, I think from memory there is a specific method to adjust this but cant remember how it goes.
 
What sort of rattle is it? Big and heavy or small and light? Hollow? Solid? When does it happen - it is associated with going over bumps, or 'round corners, or at any other time? Two prime suspects are the tin backing plate on the back of the brakes, which can be removed and binned. One that foxed me for some time was on one occasion I forgot to fully close the gate on the rear caliper and it allowed the brake pads to rattle something rotten. Oli.
 
Hi Oli, It seems to happen after about 5 minutes of driving but that's not allways the case. Thought it sounded like it was rotational and increased with wheel speed. Noticeable more at low speed than high speed though. Sort of a metallic rattling sound. I have noticed that when the hand brake is off, the mechanism that forces the shoes apart is very loose. See pic above - the anvil shaped mechanism below the horizonta spring rattles around with handbrake released. Even at 2 clicks of handbrake lever it can still move a bit. I'm starting to think it is this that is rattling around. It also gets worse over bumps which strengthens that theory. I've replaced both CVs on this side as the indie reconed that was the cause but rattle is still there. (CVs were also worn but not causing this particular noise) I guess the only other thing to check would be wheel bearing but it's not a wheel bearing sound and I can't feel any play. - Plus it looks like a pig to get at wheel bearing! I've found clark's method for handbrake adjustment so will give that a go.
 
Getting sick of this @#%$ing thing now. Used Clark's method to adjust the handbrake. All seems to work fine but the left hand side cable still flaps around when the handbrake's off. I think I will put it all back together and just turn the radio up.
 
Finally fixed, handbrake adjusted, still with some play but not as much, caliper back on and brakes bled. Took her for a test drive now and all is well. Roll on Bedford!
 
You can sometimes get a rattle from a loose or broken handbrake shoe retaining spring (the ones that hold the shoes to the back plate) these have a habit of snapping or rotting an then end up in the drum where they can rattle or grind against the drum, but you mentioned you had removed the disc so this should have been obvious. Glad its sorted maybe some new shoes would take up the extra slack in the cable.
 
Thanks David, Yes checked everything was in place when i had the disc/drum off. There is less play in the cable now and handbrake is better than it's ever been so all good for now. Craig

Well the rattle came back a few days later, but for sake of thread completion I finally found the cure. The little self adhesive shims that fit into recess on brake caliper pistons and then stick to back of brake pad were missing. Have fitted these tonight and noise is finally gone.
