Flames from NA!!!

My car normally has a pop at full revs between changes, I just guessed it was over run and the sound was magnified as I have a stainless steel system on the car. But a mate was following me today and said I was spitting flames at him! Sounds cool but it can't be right, the car must be running to rich. Pulled the plugs and they looked like they are burning ok. Am I right in thinking the mixture is preset at the factory? So I must have something not working properly, anyone want to have a guess what it could be?
 
Its the original chip as I had the Dme apart the other week. It did make my mate drop back a bit, but he does have a plastic clio cup[:D]
 
Hmm, in that case in my limited experience that doesn't sound quite right then. I'm sure someone will come along who can take a guess at the problem. My old engine would occasionaly bang and pop with the modified exhaust but I doubt flames were ever visible (sadly[:)]).
 
Check that the throttle position switch is aligned properly.

I'll be honest I don't know the correct alignment but mine is set to click as the throttle moves. I assume this to be correct.

Loosen off the adjustment screw and rotate it. You should feel or hear a click. Set it so it clicks as the throttle moves.

BTW Beaky spits flames all over the place - but then he is a Turbo.
 
Sounds to me like the overrun switch is not shutting, allowing fuel to be fed in
after is required. It is a a sipmle push fit switch and an easy change.

 
It could be a simple as a small leak into the exhaust.

If it is overfuelling on the over run and the exhaust is hot enough the extra added oxygen as the exhaust pressure reduces momentarily can cause flame outs.

I can hear mine `pop` after hard charging and revving the bejasus out of it in 2nd to 3rd [:D] On a normal run you think the engine is hot but thrash it and you can almost `feel` the heat with the windows down when you slow right down and the car ticks and pops on cool down a lot more so it can definitely ignite the fuel way down the headers (cat if you`ve got one)

I `created` a small leak on my admittedly short headers to ehaust joint in my Westfield and it banged and popped like a good `un. Superb fun in town where it echoed off the buildings [;)]
 
Throttle position switch is fine, it clicks as soon as the throttle is opened or closed. No air leaks in the exhaust. I was thinking it could be an O2 sensor but Lux doesn't have one.
Wouldn't recommend over fuelling if you have one like in a turbo as you will kill the O2 sensor very very fast. What's the over-run switch? I have never seen one? Where is it?
 
On my old 924S it had a switch/valve/module that shut the fuel off on the overrun, mine failed
and I started producing flames when backing off, fun, but not ideal. I replaced a little black box in the
fuel system and it was fine after, I think I still have the old one somewhere I shall dig it out, but I can't
find it on PET, so hoping there is a part number on the old one.

(Its a while since I did it, memory not what it was, sorry)
 
remove the throttle position switch from the side of the throttle body while leaving it connected to the wiring harness, and see if you can rev the car up... if you can, the idle contact is working fine... then put it back on the car and adjust it so it clicks just as the throttle closes.

Then pull off the vacuum hoses from the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure damper... sniff them for evidence of fuel.. if you smell or see fuel in them, replace the regulator or damper they are connected to.

Get the fuel pressure checked, it should be 2.5 bar with the vacuum hose disconnected and the engine running.
