Flat Battery Advice

Hi all,

Went to start the car this morning and the battery was flat again. I haven't really used the car for a few months now but every weekend i take it for a brief spin or start it up and leave the engine running for a while

I checked the levels in the battery which were abit low so topped it up with distilled water. I got the leads out and managed to get the car started, took it for a good spin and when i got back to the house turned the engine off, went to start it again and the battery was flat.

The info on the battery says Moll Kamina 560 15 12v 60AH 280A

Where's the best place to get a new battery, do i have to buy the exact same or are there alternatives.

Happy Easter..

Regards David

You can use alternatives, but be aware that if you have the car serviced at Porsche you can expect a note on the bill each time that "A non-standard battery is fitted" - as if that makes a difference! [:D]

Over on the 996 forum is a "members only" forum area with lots of info about battery replacement (are you a club member? If so you haven't enabled this on the forum and are showing as a non-member - see --> HERE<-- )

Here is the relevant info in direct response to your question though [:)]...

A popular battery choice is the Bosch Silver 7HN (75AH) battery, available from Euro Car Parts or Costco for around £75. The new Bosch Silver S5 010 85Ah is also a direct replacement.

topping up with water has diluted the electolyte so you probably need to add some Hydrochloric acid and check the levels with a hydrometer. Then you need to do a slow deep charge overnight.
If it was a ford I'd say just go and buy a £40 battery but these high amp Porsche batteries are too expensive to just chuck away because a little maintenance may be needed. One or two of the cells may have gone however which would give you little option.
sounds like you have a possible discharge issue so it might pay to take the car to Lucas or similar and have them check the electrical load on the battery with the ignition off or its just going to happen again
You may have an issue with your alternator /charging system

Thanks Mark..

Whats the difference between the above two batteries - i see ones 75AH the other 85AH

A battery's amp hours (AH) rating is theoretically the amps a battery will provide for an hour - so the 85 looks slightly bettter to me.

I just popped down to Costco to buy a new battery and the only one they had in stock was the S5 010 85AH which should be a direct replacement - but this seems to be alot bigger than the battery currently in my car.

"Does size matter" accordin to my girlfriend - not..!!

Costco said i could take the battery away, try it and if it didnt fit i could bring it back.

Can anyone advise.

Thanks David

You may not need a new battery. Charge the battery using a charger. Alternators cannot overcome the resistance of a flat battery whereas in the days of generators on cars they could so a good run would charge up the battery.
Get yourself a battery conditioner (Lidl were selling them last week for a tenner, same charger at Mercedes Benz was seventy quid) and keep the battery on it, when you come to use the car, fully charged battery and no worries.
Cheers,

I purchased the Bosh Silver S5 010 85AH from Costco in the end and fitted it this morning. Absolutely perfect...!! And it only cost £90.
