There's an emergency cable release. You have to take off the front wheel arch liner on the drivers side**, and fiddle around by the headlight unit for a wire loop. Give it a tug and the boot will open.
On the early cars (prior to the electric boot release) the levers have a locking device. If the battery goes flat while the alarm is set, the lever remains locked. You can fiddle in the gap between the levers with a small screwdriver, and release the locking cam. There are some instructions on this forum somewhere. I'll try and find them.....
Edit: ** See post #11 below.

Are you sure? It's the drivers side on Right Hand Drive cars...
At least it is on Boxsters, and they are the same car from the windscreen forwards.
Found the lever post from Black80xsa: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=341630
Mark - Hmmm. No, I'm not sure now. I had my PU off last weekend, and I thought the cable went to the passenger side. More investigation needed...........
Edit: Looks like Mark is correct - it seems to be on the driver's side. Have edited the original reply accordingly.

Oh well, it was definitely on the drivers side when I had my PU off
(How sad are we? Dismantling our own cars! [])

have removed 3 of the clips (bayonet type with a push in mushroom plug that expands the baynets clip to lock) also 3 no plastic washered nuts. Unfortunatly unable to remove wheel as coded wheel nut in boot!! are there further fastenings to remove as all remains secure? are there any drawings available showing dismantling sequence. I do have a CD but as is the way it,s in my office drawer. not sure if details are on CD
The first bits of this should help:

I found the number and positions of some of the plastic expanding rivets did not quite match on my car - a later Boxster [&:] so can't be 100% sure of the location/qty of them all...
There is a cut-out in the top front of the liner with some pipes running through - against the side of the front boot by these is where the emergency release is taped in place. If you can get access to the front then have a feel around there you might manage it.

[]thanks for all your help[], managed to open bonnet. As was described cut out around spring/shock tower managed to get hand up only felt one 6 mm cable/wire. having released what I beleived to be most of the clips etc was then able to prise liner from flange of wheel arch and distort liner down onto tyre. Couldn't see any wire cables. But decided that logically there must be a cable running along the offside of car towards bonnet, so went for broke pulled on the wire and voila heard the bonnet catch release!!!!!!!! nothing like working on the car dodging torrential rain and sunshine. Wouldn't mind if car was on driveway but moved it into side garaden as the drive was being relaid, therefore sitting on wet grass and mud!!! Thanks for everyone prompt responce and help. Now I only have to work out why the driver door lever isn't operating, I think there must be a clip and cable that has failed any ideas/suggestions appreciated.
forgot to mention didn't find the wire cable as shown on the boxter link, I know where it is on the rear engine cover. Will look to reroute it to a more convenient acessable place when I find it. one of those things you don't need to know until you need it. Pplus handbook was in bonnet!! But its now chucking it down, so battery on charge, will have wait for another day back to decorating son's bedroom. What an exciting life!!

If you mean the link I posted then they only show the cable being re-sited? I don't think it shows it in the original position.
Well I'm pleased to say I'm not going crazy! This had been really bugging me, so I took off the latch cover, and bingo! There is the cable - running out to the passenger side wing!
My theory is that it might have been changed on cars with the electric release.
