flat battery queery

I went to my 944 yesterday morning and had a flat battery so I borrowed a battery from work in order for me to recharge the old battery. When I put the battery on ,the radiator fan came on straight away so I disconnected the fan ready to try the following morning.
Car started 1st time so is it likely to be the fan motor switch that is causing the problem and is it much of a job to do?
many thanks
Alan

More likely the rad switch, but it might be the relay which is a hell of a lot easier to change. I'd try a relay from another car if you're near to anyone who could help.

There's always the sensible way to look at it: it's either the switch or the relay so change both and rest easy for the next 20 years. [&:]

+1 for relay or switch mate. They are hard wired to the battery and bypass the ignition switch so that the fan can work after the car is switched off.

Thermo-switch is easy to replace, at least it was on my S2. The access looks easier on the 8v engine and the switch is about £8 from GSF.

on my s2 dme will kick in fan if fuses blown or removed ie voltage drop , my s2 air con spec will kick in 1st fan if batt voltage low cranking , resets after restart hope this helps as i scratched my head first time this happend

I reconnected my fan this morning and all was fine so I ran the car up to temperature and the fan cut in when I turned the engine off(good so far)......then I went to check the car this evening, some hours after testing it and the fan is on again.
I removed the fan relay to turn it off, so is this likely to be the relay at fault considering the engine was cold long before.[8|]

If the switch has stuck on, it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. It's the more likely option, but it's one of those things that you'll only know if you change the switch or relay, or swap with a known good relay from another car.
