Went for drive weather was bad put lights on had radio on as well noticed that my lights had gone off and the radio was playing up so turned that off and thought that i had blown a fuse. Got home parked car up checked fuses all ok. Tried to re start can and not enough juice to turn engine over. I have noticed that the battery light has been on but only while idling as soon as i rev it a little it goes out so didnt think anything of it. The car has had a recon alternater fitted in the past so i am assuming that its not that. Having only recently bought the car i know it hasnt been used much in the past few years going by the mot's so any ideas?

Thanks for the replies off to get a multi meter in morning will let you know how i get on

Just a quick reply as the battery is now on charge when i went to take the battery out the bolts on it were both loose. Probably due to it being charged before as it wasnt used a lot before i got it. Will let you know if the alternator is charging when i put battery back on.

Well alternator putting out a healthy 14.5v+ so it must be either the battery not holding charge or the bolts being loose

Chris,

No worries. Sad thing is I can still remember that the positve plate on charge is expressed as: pb+h2+h2so4+pbo2 Now how sad is that after 45 years..... But as a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy you had to look after the ships batteries - not only your own life but everyone elses too.

Cheers
