Fog lights /failed MOT

Does anybody have any ideas why my fog lights and reversing lights keep failing. Every year I seem to fail my MOT on the fog lights. I usually get the MOT done at Charles Ivey and they sort it out, but I thought I'd take it down the road to my local MOT centre this year. Full credit to the guys at the MOT station, they tried to wiggle everything and checked the contacts and changed the fuse, but alas no luck. I only do about 1000 miles a year and when it's not in regular use I disconnect the battery. But it doesn't seem to be the bulbs. Any ideas?....David Stroud

David, did you make sure the front fog lights were on before operating the rear?

Apologies if you did

My local Mot station tried to do the same thing ,saying they did not work but they were trying to use the back ones without switching the front on first

Yes I realised that. I've read the owners manual thinking I must be being stupid and also checked out historical forum topics in case it had been dealt with before. I don't have working front or back fog lights. The MOT centre didn't realise about the fronts as they have presumed the side lights are fog lights!!!!...I think. I'm still convinced it's something simple though..David

I believe this is a sequence problem and may relate in part to the problem I am having with lights.

The sidelights and maybe the ignition, have to be on before the fog lights or rear fogs will work.

My current problem is that the sidelights do not always come on unless I fiddle with the switch. This has been diagnosed as a faulty connection within the main lights switch which I understand is not that unusual. I have a new switch to fit, when I can find out how to remove the old one?

My theory now becomes this, if the feed for the fogs comes from a section of the main light switch, which has a faulty contact, then fog lights will not come on.

Now if anyone can help with removal of the main light switch from the dashboard, that would be really helpful.

Just my 2p's worth.

Michael

If the 993 is like the 964 in this respect you have to have the headlights on dipped before the front fogs will come on. And only then will the rear fogs work.

Regards

Dave

Thanks everybody for all the advice. I've tried every permutation of switch position, but I do think Michael you may be right about the problem being in the switch. Initially the symbol wouldn't glow on the pull out knob, but after changing the bulb it did!...I've tried engine on...dipped beam..main beam...even talking to it!..oh and shouting!...David

Cable on the back of my front fog switch got knocked by my audio man when fitting a new radio - have you checked connections on back of the switches?
