It most certainly is the case that for the rear fogs to work the front fog lights also have to be switched on. To be honest, I too had a panic with my MOT only last week with the self same problem with the rear fogs appearing not to work. A quick fiddle with the switches and once the front fogs were switched on, the rears also works, so no failure. Robert

Had exactly the same issue with my first MOT. Luckely I knew they worked as I had checked all the lights before the MOT so knew it was just a case of finding the right sequence. Even after a few years of ownership we are still learning.

hi the car failed its mot on rear fog lights only which ive never used since ownership it past last year so i was suprized they did not work when i got home i looked and swoped some of the relays and check the bulbs it was not until i tryed the front fog lights with the rear that they worked so in order to use my rear fog lights the front fog lights need to be on with dip beam is this correct cheers ray

Ray, I'm another one that they tried to fail on this issue. If you think about it a lot of cars (especially modern Porsches) require you to pull the fog light switch once to get the front fogs on and again to get the rear fogs. i.e. front and rear fogs are often linked in series. And we trust these numpties to check that cars are safe! [8|]

well went back this morning and the gerilla that did the test made me wait one hour for him to look at the now working fog lights when i told him that both lights had to be on he said thats not right so i told him to go and ring porsche who obviously dont now how to design cars well i got my mot and wont be going there again my normal garage coulden fit me in till next week and am away till the 10 th so at least i can relax now ray

Glad you got it sorted,Ray-in the 9yrs we owned the 964,we never had a problem at my Bootle MOT garage as well as the fact they are very sensitive & careful with all my cars

Sounds like a right pita Ray. I think all German cars are made like this so its not unusual. I hope he didnt charge for a retest! Rob

What happens if you ditch the front fogs and replace with brake cooling ducts? Legally you only need a rear fog, so it seems odd that the rears dont work unless the fronts are on

The same question came in to my mind too a while back. If I fitted ducts, I think what I would do is pull the ffront fog switch out so that it is on and then unscrew the switch. That way the rear fogs would work by simply turning the rear fog switch on and off. For a more permanent solution it should be possible to remove the front fog switch and join the live feeds so that the switch is bypassed?

Looking at the schematic the rear fog relay contact feeds the front fog relay contact which means the rear must be switched on followed by the front. If the front fogs are replaced by ducts will not matter, the rear will work fine, unless the fronts are mistakenly grounded....in which case you wont have either!

You dont need the front fogs to work, mine passes each year , just pull the front fog switch, then pull the rear fog switch Kevin

Very true Kevin. What I meant was that a picky tester (like Ray came across) might make a fuss that you have to pull one switch (that appears to do nothing when ducts are fitted) in order for a second one to work.
