Foglights

Does anyone else have the retaining screws on their S2/Turbo fog/driving lights rusted out? Apparently its a common issue. Mine are so bad a cant get a screwdriver to bite on them. Whats the solution? How easy/hard is it to drill out screws? I'm trying to do this a a load of crap seems to have made its way to the insdie of the lens and they need cleaning out.

S2 currently with Patrick at Porschembri having a clutch and gearbox change, looking forward to having it back soon, and issue free, I hope!

Any help as ever is appreciated.

It's very common unfortunately, and there's a number of options available. I used araldite to affix "captive" nuts on the back of the plastic housing on one side, and bought a new foglight for the other side (it was cracked).

I seem to remember hearing of a more elegant solution recently involving plastic screws but I can't recall the details.

My fear is drilling through the screw to find I've damaged the units fixings not allowing me to re-fit it properly. What am I drilling into whilst drilling the screws out? Am I likely to damage the fiberglass chin spoiler?

If you give Porschapart a call in Bury. They have a way of fixing them.... I had one fixed on my old S2 .. For a small fee...

I had mine fixed when I had the sills done. I think they did something like a helicoil and used an allen key head so it wouldn't be so easy to round off.

im sure ive seen an advert for a JML style product that bites into rusted screw heads allowing them to be removed...

worth a shot or total crap?

Possible way to avoid the rusted bolt scenario is to use nylon bolts I bought a selection of bits from this guy on ebay but you could probably find them cheaper.

The link is to just one item so you can find him.

Cheers,

Thanks for the info, that JML product looks interesting but I'm not sure how well it would work with a rusted out screw, perhaps worth a go. Hadn't thought of plastic screws, seems a sensible option, I was just thinking of covering the screws in cavity wax of similar, but perhaps that would wear off too quickly.
