Folding Roof

I have had various soft top cars over the years and have always preferred not to fold the roof when it's wet what I mean by this is not slight dew but heavy dew, I have spoken to dealers about this over the years and no one really gives you a definitive answer on this accept to say that it should be OK or they didn't know and that the only problem would be if I left the roof folded for any length of time when wet because it will cause mildew to form. I must clarify this question by telling you that I'm a complete tart when it comes to looking after my cars and you may laugh at me but would there be any problems with folding the top when wet for the duration of a journey like maybe the material is more prone to stretching or should I just buy a half top cover to keep the roof dry on spring mornings which I would prefer not to have to faff with.

Your experiences with this would be appreciated.

I don't think there's any problem.

You could always invest in an artificial chamois, or a thick microfibre drying towel to mop the roof with before you head off?

Thank you for your replies I had a quick word with a Porsche tec about it and he said that he thought it would be fine folding it with heavy dew for a short time but not to allow it to dry as it may cause the fabric to shrink slightly as a worst case but otherwise didn't know of any problems, I will have a look at the Meguiars drying towel though.

The 986 owner's handbook tells you not to put the roof down when it is wet as it can mark the fabric.

This is all a little bit precious, isn't it?

All of our Boxsters are depreciating by thousands of pounds every year, and you're concerned about some cosmetic dampness "damage" to a fabric roof that can be replaced for less than a thousand pounds.

Boxsters are meant to be enjoyed, not worshipped.

If it's been raining and the sun comes out, I put my top down. It's what Boxsters are for.

Well said Jerry. I've never had a problem with folding the roof when it's wet. Proofing the hood every couple of years (messy but quite fun) probably helps.
