Would be nice -his first race in the Cup that year and he won!!
It looks like the chicane and the sign in the background seems to read "....hring".

If you check the old track pattern you´ll find that chicane, so I´m almost sure.

Does he wax it "old skool" style with his ear wax? []

Looks like the Nurburgring times are around 9min 30. Seems to slow to be the nordschleife alone (unless it was raining in both years) but too quick to be the nordschleife + gp circuit as used today in the 24hr race. Anyone know what circuit variation was used ? Would be interested to know how fast a Cup car would lap the nschleife ?

cheers
Mathew

Mathew,

it was Nordschleife + GP circuit - Cup cars are fast. Only the first corner (those days called Castrol S) was a bit quicker than the "hook" used in this years 24 h race. On the other hand the track was more bumpy in the past. Nordschleife alone would be probably about 8:00 min (maybe a bit less), considered that Uwe Alzen had a laptime of 9:26 in 1992 and Olaf Manthey in the slower 1990 car had a laptime of 9:43 for GP track + Nordschleife.
Pros and Ringmeisters at the wheel is a big difference.

Hope that helps,

You say that Alzen's '92 car was quicker than Olaf's '90 car. What were the differences in spec Hacki?

Apart from a few more bhp, 18" instead of 17" wheels and air jacks -nottalot!![:)]

The 18" and I think a reduction in weight of unsprung parts was the point.
Biggest progress was due to 18" and the tyres as a combination. Those days the goal was not to be too far away in laptimes from DTM which was very popular.

Air-jacks make the car go faster? That should be discussed btw Des and SimonExtreme... after discussing the ram-air effect of beans in the driver´s breakfast. Ah, and not to forget: cams for RHD RSs[:D]
