Ok so MOT time and I have one set of mags with non legal 5 year old rubber. And one set of alloys with 3 year old on the wear bars and slightly below, toyo's R888's . Are the toyo's still ok for trackdays? i.e. do they have much life in them beyond the 1.6mm wear bars or are they junk? I am not trying for qualifying laps just using for fun at track days!

The plan would be to put road tyres on the mags, suggestions welcome for good, possibly budget ish ROAD tyres. And leave the toyo's for track days , maybe trailering the RS?
Or just go for a set of new track day rubber?
On a tight budget so not sure which way to jump, so ideas welcome.

Laurence, I never let my tyres get below about 3mm and wouldn't dream of trailering in the wet with dodgy tyres. Looks like you'll need to sell the wife or kids.

think i may have caused some confusion. The car hitched to and driving the trailer would have perfectly decent tyres. My RS would have brand new road tyres for the road But if trailered to a track day could be fitted with the no longer road legal set of wheels ! hope this makes sense?

I did wonder!.

I think tyres with low tread may not heat up quite as quickly as full tread - not really an issue anyway. However, I'd be very wary of letting a tyre wear down to the canvass (very easy to do with such wide tyres and it's very difficult to check the inner edges, especially at the rear - other than that I can see no reason not to let them wear right down).

I'd say go for it. I wouldnt worry about wearing them down, they'll be fine. And whilst wearing tyres down to the canvas, apart from the risk of punctures, you'll be fine. I've done the same with numerous sets of yoko 48s, without issue. You'll get a few more days out of them. I actually plan to do the same with mine, I've put my 48s on the wear markers after oulton, so I'm putting another set on the other set of rims, and will finish the first set off at Abbeville. Otherwise it all gets quite expensive, I agree.
