Forget all this power talk

There's been quite a lot of talk about power and superchargers and 3.2 engines this week (guilty as charged [:)]) so I thought I'd start a thread showing what our cars are historically all about - HANDLING [8D]

Patrick sent me a couple of pics showing his car on track in a high speed corner. Remember he has the KW suspension fitted so it corners with very little roll. This is a third gear corner taken nearly flat and then changing up to fourth shortly after the third picture:

Oh - he does have a big powerful engine too [:-]

Lovely piccies!

(Have to say, I recall someone once saying that 'No-one buys a 944 for the engine, you need to buy one for the handling', and they were right. It also allows me, with a mere lowly S2, to pretend I can mix it with the big boys!)

Of course, the biggest factor is the driver, so who fancies starting a post entitled "Driving", in which everyone can claim to be the best driver?

Oli.

Those pics look amazing! what do i have to do to make my car ride that nicely?! It looks like a 4x4 next to that! I love his wheels too, where can you get those and how much?

god that looks gorgeous.!
I'd love to see them race. I'll have to look at the classic racing calendar for this year. I'm only just down the road from Thruxton and Castle Coombe

not quite as sunny & warm over here -very slippy at Oulton yesterday

I've got some good pics I'll post up later

Good going Ed, that does look really slippy indeed yet you have the suspension loaded up quite nicely so must have had a fair bit of speed through there.

At that exact point in the corner and in those conditions I would imagine you do not have your foot buried in the carpet to accelerate up the next straight []

Thanks for the compliments guys. I actually have those pictures just like that (vertical) in a frame above my pc just to remind me why I've been spending such time and money on this car. []
Paul is right, this is hard in 3rd gear. That is at our best circuit in Sydney (Eastern Creek) and that was a day before I got on the plane to the UK last Sept. That is a big V8 Holden in that picture and also at the track on that day was a DB9 which was amazingly nimble through the corners, a few 996's, a recent Ferrari of some description, and various V8's. To be fair a lot of these guys were just doing a mid week drive day and possibly hadn't even been on a track before or very often so I had a distinct advantage, however no car came close on that day except for a race modified black Lotus and we had a great dice for 3 laps until the (overzealous) flag marshall at the end of the main straight 'Leapt' out at me with the black flag while I was just starting to slow down at the end of the main straight (230kms) into a long, very fast left hander. Well I took my eye off the ball and went into a long fast spin into the grass and luckily didn't hurt anything. I got flagged for some smoke which at that point (build no 2) we had a lot of blow by.
Anyway the car wasn't set up properly that day with neg camber and that still had the stock head and cam so there is a lot more to come out of the car yet. As Paul mentions though, the handling is exemplified in those shots. I love the 3rd one as I know just how much load is on the car at that point and it looks like I'm so flat through there. The best part that day was following the Aston and his mate in a 996 who were dicing around and not waving me through and coming up behind them onto the last corner before the quite long straight and just roaring past them off into the distance. [:D] Take your multi thousand dollar cars and stick that up your...nice weather isn't it lads. [:D]
Ben you too can have this handling. I know you have the KW's on the list. Add to that lowering the car, Racers Edge and Elephant race solid suspension bushings, M-sport 80% LSD, S2 cwp, plus 255/285 Toyo R888's don't hurt either. You are going to need to do some mods in that dept. with all that power you now have under your right foot.[:)] Don't think you've stopped spending yet my friend.[]. The wheels are an Australian brand called Simmons. They're real old school with the emphasis on strength and durability rather than bling although the 5 spoke always looks the best pattern on our cars IMHO.

Nice pic Ed. I've been lucky enough not to be at a wet trackday yet. It is a daunting proposition.

Theses corners were taken at fairly high speeds, http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/spicster1974/01.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/spicster1974/IMG_8188.jpg not sure to be exact as i never seem to get time to look at the speedo ( to busy watching for traffic i guess ! )... any how the car has the standard suspension and shocks and in my opinion handles very very well, but the thing i love best about these cars is the feed back and the forgiveness they give you in return for a good blast. just dont hope i take it for granted one day ![FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Nice pic Ed. I've been lucky enough not to be at a wet trackday yet. It is a daunting proposition.

it can be a bit tricky sometimes [:)] particularly when the track is greasy & not properly wet. I had a bit of a moment at Lodge that the photographer managed to get (see below). I was luckier than some..... An F430 came off at Druids & took out n/s front & rear quarters [:(] Druids is a very tricky double apex bend - very fast approach, miss the first apex, hit the second one & there's a crest on the exit that hides the last part of the corner - it's very easy to assume the bend finishes at the crest & run out of tarmac...
In the wet the FWD cars had a huge advantage (I had a ride in one of my old cars - an ex race car Mk1 Fiesta with a 140-150 bhp crossflow & LSD - it had huge amounts of grip & could get the power down very early. It probably has a similar power/weight to my 944 - I could pull away slightly on the straights but it was quicker through the bends)
