Now even though i love Porsches and would love to own a model of each, when my friend threw the keys at me for his new car and said come back in an hour i have to confess i fell in love with the Mercedes benz again (and i was gone for longer than an hour!) But having not driven a Merc since i sold my old 190 cosworth i have to say i was very impressed with the product or was it just the speed ? Heres a couple of pics of the beast.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

525 bhp 155 limited... Doh, nearly got there ![:D]

I spent a happy day sampling most of the Mercedes' cars around Silverstone last year and the E63 AMG (as opposed to the S63) was one of my favourites, mainly due to the noise and fury of that superb 6.2 litre V8 (yes, I know it's called a 63, but they've exaggerated a little...[:D])

However, for the price of that S63 AMG, I would rather have a 968CS with Ninemeister supercharger kit, an R400 Caterham, a 944t with some Jon Mitchell witchcraft under the bonnet and an old diesel smoker for a general hack and still have loads of money left over for play time!

Memo to self - remember to buy Lotto ticket this week....[8|]

I do like them but I think if I had the money for one of them i would have to agree with Nick for the choices of car except for anything with diesel[:'(]

Your right in what you say and i would never pay over 100k for a car unless it was for a GT3 RS which i was going to keep for the rest of my life, but i think if i had the money i would have one of theses as well to do the family things in,like vist the monkeys at longleat ect...ect...[:D][:D]

You are forgiven! I absolutely love Mercs. Give me one over an Audi or Beemer any day. They are just so so stylish. They may not be as attractive to look at as an Audi but they are superb examples of engineering over asthetics - substance over style and being an engineer that sort of concept really appeals to me. They are a true German muscle car. I love that TG test of the BMW M5 estate vs the equivalent Merc estate and though the BMW was more precice and faster round the bends the sheer sledgehammer power of the Merc meant that it just left the BMW standing. I know which car i'd rather have - give me the Michette over the surgeons scalpel any day.

Them Mercs are some machine and they are HARD... ! There is a '00 Merc S class taxi about here in Galway with 427k miles....! The driver has her from new.. He said he pushed the boat out a bit when he got it but it has been ultra reliable. He said he would have been through 3 Primeras or Mondeos at this stage....[&:]

Interesting ... I can only see reasons not to buy a new Merc (not being able to afford one is one reason of several!)

I've never liked Mercs. Sorry. I have liked Audis and BMW's, but never Mercs. (Apart from the W124, which I make an exception for!)

And buying new cars is a mugs' game, because of the HUGE cost in depreciation.

And, as opposed to Scott, I'd choose that scalpel every day of the week, over the machete. Precision over power, every single time.

I'm sure that was a lovely car you drove, but I wouldn't even have sat in the drivers seat, let alone driven it. Sorry.

(Good to have a difference of opinion tho'! That's what makes the world go 'round ... )

Oli.

Just out of curiousity, but my only experience of Mercedes has been E classes and they have such awfully remote steering I can't imagine wanting any kind of performance engine in them. I assume the more heavily breathed upon examples actually have a steering wheel that is seemingly connected to the wheels?

I quite liked them [:)] as a quiet way to transport passengers but I know it'd sit there gathering dust all the rest of the time.

I just followed a CL63 AMG into work and it was a really strange grey with what looked for all the world like yellow leather.

The thing was, it looked nothing. At first I assumed it was a normal CL500 as the colour disguised the quad exhausts and tasty bodykit.

All I could think was it's a reasonable car, but think of the depreciation!! I just don't understand why anybody would want a CL63 AMG over say a DB9 or Maserati Gran Turismo.

I'm quite a fan of Mercs in general as an alternative and opposite drive to the Porsche. In fact once spending is complete on the S2 I think I'll be looking for a W123 280CE to complement it as an alternative everyday driver.

Very interested to hear your comments chaps - I work for Mercedes-Benz UK at head office in sunny Milton Keynes! In the 5 years I have been working here, the quality of the products has certainly improved dramatically. The new C-Class for example, is a real driving machine. I spent some time in the product management department and my job was to book in competitor cars for analysis, so you can imagine I've driven all sorts of machinery. However, my most vivid experience has to be the night I spent with an S65 (now replaced by the S63 of course). 613bhp and 1000Nm of torque, absolutely incredible machine. I ended up lying awake all night with a strained torso! If I were spending my hard-earned on a daily driver, I don't think you could get much better than the previous E55, and all for less than £10k for a nice one!

We have been owning various MB saloons (from 190 2.6 to 600 V12) as family cars for more than 15 years and at one stage its all MBs on our drive way. They are great family cars but no sports - too heavy I assume. Reliable, safe, spacious and good torque.

One of my best mates was a head tech in a merc garage and he took me in a E55 when it was new...WOW what a car. after that i spent what i could and the closest i could get to that was a 190 2.6 cosworth... but i always wanted the EVO...[:(]http://www.worldcarfans.com/5050208.001

I always look at these car differently to a Porsche, to me a porsche is for two and mercs is for the whole family the dog and the shopping but one of each would be nice ! [:D]

I've always had a soft spot for the '80's 500SEC with the pillarless door so that when the front and rear side windows were down there was no interuptions along the side of the car. A stunning looking car, very fast and from an era when Mercs were still solidly build.

Totally agree. My S2 cab is for three (not just 2) since my son also enjoys sitting in the back esp in summer. The Porsche and MB are for completely different market but equally successful in what they do. My wife is currently driving a '98 E240 v6 which is absolutely reliable and serves its purpose as a family car. Since now you have mentioned the E55 (W124), i maybe tempted to swap the E240 for that.
