FPR Dilemma

I have a problem starting my S2 when hot. It starts easily when cold and starts easily if re-started within a few minutes when hot but leave it for more than say 10 minutes and it is difficult to start.

It ideally needs a leak down test but I don't have a pressure gauge and I am reasonably sure it is down to the FPR although by no means certain.

The question is. Do I replace the FPR "˜like for like' or is it advisable to fit an adjustable FPR with gauge. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350392877911&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

My reasoning is that if the adjustable one would work, when correctly adjusted, it would also indicate any leakage in the system.

Before blaming the FPR have you tried the DME relay?

I'm not sure there's any benefit in changing from the standard FPR, it's done good service for 20 years, after all.
 
Interesting. My S2 did something very similar when in France last summer. I never got to the bottom of it, and it seems to have cured itself now.

Does the problem go away if you remove the plastic trim over the fuel rail?

I think that removing the cover might delay the problem Oli and I will give it a try as I think you are on the right track. The fuel is either vaporising or leaking and if it is vaporising then removing the cover will help.

If the fuel is leaking, it is either through the injector(s) or back to the tank. If through the injectors there would be a lot of black smoke on eventual start up and I haven't noticed any but will double check.
 
That adjustable FPR on e bay will be a bugger about to fit and you will have to blank where the original fitted on the fuel rail.
 
Thanks Frenchy. I hadn't considered the fitting issues but clearly I would not want to make a lot of unnecessary work for myself. Are you aware of an adjustable FPR (with gauge) that will fit?

 
you can get a stndard FPR or go to 3 bar and fit a guage to the end of the fuel rail if it is the same set up as an 8v car ? Promax can answer the question for you or have a look on their website.
 
actually if you're interested I might have a spare FPR in the garage - A standard one removed from the turbo when I fitted a 3 bar FPR
 
The fuel rail layout is different on 16 valve engines and the S2 pressure is 3.8 bar but what you say is what I expect I will have to do. However, I am trying to avoid paying out £90. 00 on a part I might not need and also sourcing a separate fuel pressure gauge and the adjustable FPR with gauge seemed to be a neat idea.
