Freaky creaky shocks and bearings...

I have developed a creak in my 98 C2 coupe 88,0000 miles - or I should say that during the course of a longish drive say 100 miles plus I develop a creak that can be heard under braking or when the car is just maneuvering slowly, say in queue or some such.

Can't decide at the moment whether its from the front or the back, (although I'm suspecting front), and the contenders are shock absorber (s), wheel bearing or engine mount as well (although I think the latter is the least likely).

I think there is a bit of vibration as well, a little like scuttle shake (not usually applicable to coupes) and just about noticeable on crappy (concrete) road surfaces at speed.

Any similar experiences?

If indeed the view is a shock, what's the view on replacing just one?

Or should it only be in pairs and are there any recommendations to the standard shocks (which to be fair seem pretty good)?

In anticipation as always.

J

The creak will most likely be the ball joint on the lower wishbone (coffin arm). Try standing in the front boot and bouncing. If the creak is from the front you will probably hear it.

Hi,
I had the problem as Richard described, plus my top mounts were delaminating so that's worth checking too :)

Yes that sounds about the size of it - thanks (I guess!).

Are the ball joints replaceable or am I looking at a whole new wishbone (s)?

Also I can see the top gaiter is split - is that likely to be associated to this problem or am I potentially heading for other trouble if unattended?

Apologies for ignorance but didn't really understand the comment about the top mounts delaminating - could you elaborate please?

J

At 88k, I wouldn't be surprised if the top mounts have gone. I replaced them on my Cayman at 60k. The central metal bush becomes detached (delaminated) from the rubber bush.

The wishbone ball joint can't be replaced separately, but you can buy the TRW (original) or Meyle (aftermarket) replacements at very reasonable prices these days.
