From a Boxster to a 993

Anyone done this or vice versa? After 3 years of a 2.7 I'm tempted to cross to the dark side and get a late model 993 coupe manual with around 40k on the clock.

I'll be doing around 8k miles per annum - using it predominantly for weekend work and the occasional business jaunt.

Issues for me are overall maintenance costs and reliability - plus the issue of getting a car that is so much older in design.

As someone said, everyone must have a 911 at least once in their life.....
 
It should be fun....just giev yourself a bit of time to get used to the handling compared to the boxster - the box lets you away with murder!
 
I switched from a 993 C2 to a Boxster S. The 993 is fantastic car but of a different era to the Boxster. If you are the sort of person who owns a classic car and love those golden olden days the 993 will fit the bill admirably. The Boxster is a modern car brimming with technology, apart from being a fantastic drive. Its interior is better laid out, ride is more comfortable, handling more forgiving. Across country I'd back the Boxster S any day.
The switch I then made was to a 996C4. With this you get modern design and technology, in the mould of the Boxster with the excitement of a Carrera.
All three are great cars, just all a bit different

Agree 100% with Tim.

The 993 deserves its legendary status, not least because of the classic design and build quality. I've owned a 993 Targa (great for enhancing engine noise and a decent effort at providing convertible fun). My last 993 was a 4S but I have to say the olde worlde features and far from effortless drive has pushed me into the 21st century.

A Boxster S test drive sold me the Roadster (vs. Carrera) concept and I can honestly say that I was surprised by how good it felt compared to my 4S.

Now expecting delivery of a Boxster S Anniv next month!

you will find the 993 a bit raw after the Boxster - less forgiving, poorer ride, but fabulous car. The onyl problem is that they have tended to increase in value recently, due to their cult air-cooled following. They now overlap in price with the early 996's which are looking good value by comparison.

993 perfect for weekend drivers tool, 996 more practical, and useable everyday without fear of losing it.
 
Thanks guys - a move of house means that I won't need the car everyday and can indulge in something a bit more impractical for the weekend so rather than go from a 2.7 to an "S", I'm considering the 993. If the budget was bigger I'd go for a 996 but there are a few really good 993 around in the high 20's/early 30's. The 996's for that money are far from perfect.
