From Race car to Track day car

[FONT=calibri"]I purchased a rundown 944s race car approx. 2 years ago for a good mate after he caught the 994 bug, from driving my 2.7 track car, now sold. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The seller said he had lost interest in the 944 as he was having misfire issues after 15-20 mins track time.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The spec of the racer was as follows –[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]944s with remapped ecu, stainless exhaust .
OMP 6 point bolt in cage, Cobra seat, harnesses, fire extinguisher , etc[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]SPAX coilovers front, non coilover rear, 30mm torsion bars, polly bushed, brakes had uprated ferodo ds3000 pads. Nothing to startling there, but a good solid base to have a bit fun with at trackdays.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The intention was to make the car road legal again, so it could be driven to the track days. As you can see from the above photo front light’s had been completely removed, along with parts of the harness, the interior was a complete mess with cables for cut off’s running across the floor, dash had been hacked about and sharp edges left. The fuel pump was mounted stupid low, I did question how the car had ever passed scrutineering, so bad was the prep work![FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The suspension setup was comical, different ride heights at the rear and sitting way up in the air, front suspension was not a lot better with different camber side to side. The brakes were spongey as hell, turned out to be a new calliper had been purchased for the driver’s side front. Big problem was it was a passenger side calliper, just mounted upside down!!!![FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The process of righting the wrong’s started with the suspension, re-indexing the rear torsion bars (it has got 30mm bars in), setting camber, toe etc. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]A replacement brake calliper, the correct one, was purchased for the driver’s side and the brakes bled through.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The fuel pump was mounted back into the standard position.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]Lights and electrics were sorted next, the electrical bodgery was on a whole new level and numerous insecure earths and live feeds were identified, cut offs removed, battery located back into its correct position and interior tidied up.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The seat was replaced and adjustable mount made up, along with installing a passenger seat.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The body was next on the list as an ex racer it was never going to be perfect, and is what my mate and I term a nice 5 meter car![FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The time from purchase to being ready for MOT may seem long, however this is due to the owner having to restructure and relocate his business owing to the down turn in the Oil industry, just after purchase. Happily this has turned out well, as has the finished car.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Now looking forward to getting it out on track come the spring!

Looks good Mark, now that Peter has got rid of all his TVRs he can get cracking on yours!

Hi Dave, yes TVR's all gone.

Should be getting my shell on the ramp this weekend.
Bolt the parts on i have been collecting, cage has 3 week lead time. Once cage is in, car will be painted. Im hoping 3 month!

It Looks very low, although it could be the additional side skirts that give this impression.
Did you have corner weight scales to set the ride heights or just equal sill measurements etc. ?

My car is not as low and the front wishbone angle is not parallel with the road, this seems to be causing excessive
camber changes and it's something that I need to fix, you may also find the same issue ?

What size Anti Roll bars does it have and are the Spax fronts the RSX units?

R

Yes i think the sill covers make it look very low, its also only got 195/50 15 tyres, so profile is quite small.

The front arms dont look excessively angled, if we run into bump steer issues may have to raise it or get some spacer blocks. Lyndseys in the US do them.

Roll bars are 25.5 and 19mm.

Front coilovers are the rsx but with a thicker piston rod.

Ok thanks 195/50's as opposed to 215/60 will of course substantially change the ride height and gearing, which with the sills probably make it look lower than it really is, unyet my bones are at quite an angle and need sorting.

What's the spacer blocks?

Where's the 19mm rear ARB from 968 Mo30?, and the 30mm T bars ?are they hollow or solid?
I didn't know Spax offered different version piston rod diameters on the struts, Do you know what the front spring rates are?

Google 944 bumpsteer kit, you can either lift the steering rack or drop the track controll arms.

Torsion bars are solid, from the US, cant remember compamy who supplied them, there is a receipt for about £400 in the paper work that came with the car so could find out if required.

Rear roll bar is 18mm non adjustable not 19mm

Oh I see what you mean now yes I 've seen the spacers for the Bump steer, but I'm more interested in getting the wishbone angle
horizontal and I believe because it's at an angle it's affects the Neg camber because the leverage angle is too acute. When i can get it straight across at ride height it won't change the camber as much. I've been on to some Yankie Racers regarding this and they are saying it makes a big different to get the wishbone sorted more than the bumpsteer.

Ok I've got an 18mm rear bar also, but I'm considering a thicker one and / or rear Coil Springs as well as retaining the 27mm Hollow T-bars.

Don't call him 'Dave'!

The 2.7 in the first pic is my old one!
Good to see they are still being converted for use as track and race cars.

In that case then, we have met, as I have the sports seats from your series one car in my office.

Or maybe it was from your friend. The vendor had Mikes car, a destruction order Turbo and a series one car with nice trim, which I bought in September 2014.

Yes that was me, the series 1 i sold on, and bought a non sunroof series 2 car to build into a track car.
Mike's 2.7 went back to the midlands again!
And between me and Pere we bought several more 944's.
Most have been parted out, we do however have a very nice early series2 which we are restoring.
My shell went on the ramp yesterday so i could start bolting suspension and brakes on.
