front arch liners

Not a posting for the experts who take out their front arch liners every other weekend, but here are a few notes that I made this weekend while doing this job on my '89 2.7:
1. If you haven't taken out the arches and cleaned behind them - you should; there's probably all sorts of mucky/rusty stuff back there.
2. The liners are held in place with plastic nuts (10mm socket) on coarse-thread studs, plus some 8mm head self-tappers and spire nuts. Take care as they are probably mucky / rusty / fragile.
3. The plastic nuts have washers that will probably need replacing - stainless "penny washers" M5x20 or 25 size are cheap on ebay: I recall 8 per side
4. The front outer lower self-tapper + spire nut can be replaced by a nut and bolt - I used stainless button-head allen bolts for neatness but you could also use those plastic nuts and bolts from number plates
5. The lower rear of the liner is held to the body using 2x metal strips with self-tappers and spire nuts at the liner end, and plastic nuts onto studs in the body. I suggest you do not attempt to remove the self-tappers in the liner, but simply detach the plastic nuts from the other ends of the strips.
6. When replacing the liner, I found that the key is to fit the nut in the top centre to hold the liner in place first - then it hangs there and can be manipulated onto the other fixings.
Power-hose the liner, bottle-brush through the vents into the engine compartment up by the base of the windscreen, brush out and apply Dynax or whatever to the wing cavities, then you feel much better after the job is done.
Apologies to the experts if this is very "944s for tiny tots", but if you haven't done this job before (and you should), hopefully the above will be useful

Good description Mike and having just done mine it explains it very well.

The good news if you want to spend a bit of cash is that all the nuts, spire clips, washers, plastic pop rivets etc. are still available from OPC [:D]

Indeed so, and about 2p each. Last time I went to collect spares from OPC Cambridge my total bill was 79p, and I still got a nice welcome and a very agreeable cup of coffee in their posh reception area....

My bill for all new OPC fasteners for sill covers, under tray, PU and arch liners came to about £120.

And while you are in there check out the fuel line in the offside wing for corrosion as well as the brake lines.

And even if they are all fine, coat them in copious amounts of grease to keep them that way [:D]
