Front Boot Lid Struts

Mears

New member
Can somebody tell me the secret to changing the front lid gas struts please? The bottom mounts appear well-buried, suggesting major strip down to unclip them. Also any opinions on strut longevity, Porsche vs pattern parts?
Thanks

Have a look at this thread - sounds fairly easy, I've not had to try yet:

I did mine recently and they aren't as tough as they look.

First up remove the scuttle cover. This is the plastic cover which hides the heater blowers etc. This just pulls off.

The offside (RHS) one has a cover on it which you need to pull upwards to reveal the clip. There's also a wiring harness clipped to the blower that can be unclipped for better access.

Firstly unclip and pull out the pin on the top fixing to release the top of the strut. That's the easy part just don't lose the clip!

The tool of choice for removal of the lower fixings is a long thin flat bladed screw driver. You need to slide it down the side of the strut and behind the C clip (you'll see a slot for this very purpose) then you can just flick the clip back to release the ball joint. Once this is done you just pull the ball joint off by hand.

Have a helper to hold the bonnet or if like me use a broom handle to prop it up, as once a strut is disengaged the boot will come down.

Swap the cover to the new strut then loosely insert the top of the strut roughly in to position in the hinge, and then firmly push the lower ball joint fixing in to place. You do not need to release the clip to fit the new strut as it will spring out and will fit nice and firmly once located.

Once the bottom fixing is secure you can fit the upper pin and clip by lifting the bonnet slightly past it's natural open position.

Repeat these steps for the nearside but this side is easier as access is slightly better and there's no cover on the strut.

Hope this helps

Only thing I'll add is stuff the bottom of the compartment with cloth so if like I did you drop any of the pins they drop onto the cloth and not into the endless void below never to be seen again.

Pushing the ball joints together can be a bit tricky so use a bit of vaseline to help!

Just ignore the one about half removing the clip before installing your new struts! that one had me cursing until I realised you could fit them just fine without moving them at all!

Many thanks all, very helpful (not sure why my initial forum search didn't find the previous article posted on this topic). I feel much better equiped to tackle this chore now!

Be careful if you support the lid with a "stick" - when you push the lid up to line up the holes in the bracket and gas strut, the stick WILL fall down and potentially hit a wing. Don't ask how I know......A second pair of hands is much better.
A tip on the Pelican website is to loop dental floss around the clip when you are putting them back. Then, if it is dropped it will be easier to find. I didn't do this and can now tell you that clips are a bargain at 11 pence each from an OPC.....

Haha I didn't mention this bit as I thought I was a complete donut when it happened to me! [:D]
