Remove the lower end of the strut as described in P-car. However, when refitting the new strut, simply put a blob of grease on the socket and lever onto the ball using a long thin piece of wood or a screwdriver wrapped in cloth.

I checked out the P-car article and put off doing these for at least two years, it just seemed so damned hard. I eventually got fed up with the bonnet closing on my head that I bit the bullet and replaced them.
When I got round to doing it it was a doddle. The end of the struts that you can't get to are a push fit, so there's no circlip to ping away into the depths of the bulkhead space as the P car article says.
Get someone to hold the bonnet open for you, unclip the top circlip and release the strut from the clip then use a block of wood or protected screwdriver to remove the lower clip. Re-fitting as they say, is the reverse. I didn't need anything other than finger pressure to clip the lower fixing into place. You can then send the helper away as one good strut will support the bonnet well enough to enable you to do the other side.

The engine cover struts are just as easy but the circlips closest to the rear bulhead are a bu99er to get to. I removed the air cleaner body to get to the righthand one but the lefthand one was a swine because there's nothing that can be removed easily to aid access. But still probably only 20 or 30 minutes in total.

Tip :-
When replacing the clips tie a piece of cotton to them to aid retrieval because you will drop one of these springy flirty things behind the engine and probably more than once - I know cos I've been there ! []
