Front Brake calliper

Hi can any one help?

I have a 1989 944 S2, the tab on the top s/steel pad glide that holds the spring in, has snapped off. I can't get the hex screws out of the calliper. Has any one come across this before and how did you get the hex screws out? Does any one know of a company that refurbishes Brembo Callipers.[]

Only way I found to get the screws out is to weld a nut to the top of them. The heat breaks the threadlock / corrosion and the nut gives you something to get a hold of with a socket.

I've never heard of the tab snapping but struggling to get the hex undone is a common problem. They are loctited in and need heat to undo but even then can be awkward. Virtually any Porsche Indie will be experienced in refurbing the Brembo callipers as it's a common maintenance item with cars of this age. Whereabouts in the country are you?

I'm just outside Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. I was going to give RPM a ring tomorrow as they are only about 5 miles away.

+1 for RPM - they've refurbed all my callipers and much other stuff as well. IIRC they charged me £25 extra for drilling out and replacing seized/sheared bolts. No way a job I could have done myself.

yeah they are a pain, I did mine about 6 months ago - I got 1 full set off a Caliper but at least one bolt on the other 3 wouldn't come off. I took it to a local place who mig (i think) welded a nut on top and got it out that way. I don't know how the tab could have snapped off, its a good chunk of metal! Unless it corroded away and a bit of force finished it off. In which case you'l need to replace it - IIRC they weren't cheap when I rang OPC Exeter last year...

Or do you mean the whole "spring" that holds the pads has come away from the caliper? That wouldn't surprise me as mine looked as though a few more years corrosion would do that. If thats the case I'm guessing its a caliper!

+2 for RPM. They removed the spring plates from my calipers when I couldn't get the retaining screws out.

If you need a replacement for the broken spring plate then I may have one in the garage. I've got a couple of scrap calipers which have damaged seals but there may be a good spring plate. PM me if you need one and I'll look.

I have a set of 4 calipers from an S2 that I am going to strip and recon. I will take some piccies while I do them and post a guide if anyone is interested?

Cheers for your input chaps. RMP are very helpfull and I dropped of the calliper at the guys work shop, they use to do this job.
Had thought about having a go as I have a mig welder, but thought better of it. I managed to snap the tab off the top pad glied. You live and learn. RPM have ordered a new pad glied and screws so hopefully should be up and running again next week. Dose any one know were I can get hold of a workshop manual, only can find the blue Haynes 944 one.
