front brake nightmare

hi all decided to change the top mounts as it was one of the things that porsche noticed when it was in for it's service so bought the mounts took suspension off car changed it over (they didn't seem worn to me metal was a bit rusty but rubber fine) put it back on car went to put the caliper back on and for some reason the top m12 allen bolt didn't tighten so checked the threads in the carrier and threads totally stripped first time i've taken the brakes apart on the car just wondering if the last garage that had done has put the wrong size bolt in and over tightened it and stripped the threads.

has anybody else had this happen??
 
It is quite a common occurrence. The hole in the hub is a through hole, and water gets in the back and corrodes the thread of the bolt. As the bolt unscrews it picks up on the aluminium hub, and strips out the thread. Being very careful, and working the bolt back and forth by small amounts helps, but not always.

Your best fix is TimeSert thread inserts, rather than the HeliCoil type. With care, they can be fitted in situ.
 
thanks rich u da man, will look into the timesert inserts i didn't think the heliciols would be upto it so was looking on the bay for a new hub carrier, quick question tho the 2 m12's are different sizes one is 5/7mm smaller than the other also ones got a black jap finish and the other is stainless finish that is the smaller of the two.
 
The bolts should be M12x1.5 thread x 72mm long. (Underside of head to tip of bolt). The originals were Cap Head (Allen) bolts, but these days they often supply Torx bolts. As far as I know they are all oil-black finish. I've never seen a stainless one.
 
hmmm yes so the 65mm stainless one has been put on by someone before i got the car...oh magic, going to check the pitch of the threads on it starting to think some one has put a bigger pitch in and knackered the threads as it was the one that came out the top hole v easy after i loosened it. seen the price o time-sert's and even m12 heli's going to be cheaper buying a second hand hub carrier of a certain auction site.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. The trouble is that you have to buy a complete TimeSert kit. If you are going to the trouble of removing the hub, why not just get your local indy to do the inserts? Or send it to one who can. It should be much cheaper than buying a used hub.
 
no probs on getting back to me, it's cool my mate is a rep for a company that supplies that sort of thing so got a timesert kit coming soon as for the indy up here i wouldn't trust them would rather take it to my porsche centre, i can get a 2nd hand one for about the 50 mark so will get it fixed or replaced during the winter got plenty of time
