Front Brake pad change Boxster S with PSM

I am just about to change the front Disc pads for the first time in my Boxster S Facelift with PSM. Is there anything I should know i.e. is there a particular way to push the pistons back in? Should I open the nipples on the callipers and push the pistons in or just push the pistons back in and let the brake fluid go up into the reservoir?

Just push the pistons back in, but keep an eye on the fluid reservoir to check it doesn't overflow. I use a very large pair of water pump pliers to squeeze the pistons in - with some protection on the caliper to stop damage to the paint.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. Incidentally the Glasgow OPC told me to open the bleed nipples and not try to push the fluid up to the reservoir as it could damage the seals in the calipers and or pressure cylinders.

I push. You must bottom out the pistons or the new pads are too thick to be put in.

Pics show Two different ways.

If you were to push the pistons open too quickly it might cause problems with the seals but you would have to be very heavy handed to do that or be using some monsterous peice of equipment to get the leverage. Just open the pistons nice and slowly and you shouldn't have any problems - they do open smoothly so there is no need to attack them. Just one note - as shown in the pics above open the pistons fully with the pads in situ as if you remove the pads first you'll open one piston then when you push the other piston back the first piston will just close again so you need to push the pistons open together.

A nice easy job that the OPC and specialists seem to charge a fortune for.

Thanks for all the advice. Job done now and it was painless. The pistons all slid nicely back using a long tool like a screwdriver to apply the pressure lent to me by a mechanic friend. It helped to borrow some time on a proper car lift so the calliper was at eye level whilst i was standing up. Now my fear is broken its the rears next (they don't need doing quite yet!!!!)

Robin,
Where did you purchase your pads from and, if you don't mind me asking, how much did they cost? I will be needing new front pads and discs soon (my discs are apparently heavily corroded on the inside according to the OPC); I too have a facelift Boxtser S. I was planning to get it from OPC with the 10% PCGB parts discount or are indi's better priced on genuine Porsche parts?

Many thanks.

Hi,
I bought them from my OPC Glasgow and including my discount they cost £157.38. The same mechanic freind told me he could have sourced them from elsewhere at about40% off. The pads are Tarox for Brembo Calipers. The Porsche part numbers are P996.351.088.01 C1431 Shims x4
P996.352.949.03 C2471 Pads x1
P996.612.365.00 C1455 Wear sensors x2.
Remember to peel the backing paper off the shims so the first time pressure is applied to the pads they bond to the shim. It stops the brakes squeeling I beleive. I only used coppor slip on the pin that holds the pads in position. Hope this helps.
