Front Brake Pads and Calipers Need To Remove

Hi All
Some basic questions from a fairly new owner.
I need to remove the brake pads and calipers. What is the best way of releasing the shaped spring that holds the pads in the caliper.
Also when removing the caliper is it best to release the brake hose from the bracket on the strut by removing the clips that holds it there. Otherwise it looks like you would bend the brake pipe which is not a good idea.
Thanks Phil

your best bet is to purchase the Bentley book which goes through all these kinds of jobs...otherwise there are lots of good sources... including jackals (jackals forge, http://www.jackals-forge....Sbrakes/rsbrakes.html)

to remove the spring, you get a large pair of mole grips and squeeze it in the middle, this reduces the length of the spring and it will come out of the latching mechanism.

the pipe won't come out of the strut even when the clip is removed... but if you are just replacing pads, it's doable... usual technique is the coat hanger from the strut to hold the caliper. you might need a slide hammer to get the pads out... one that fits the holes on the top of the pads is best.... potentially allows you to avoid removing the caliper at all... unless you're doing other work ?

good luck !

Andrew

Thanks Andrew for your help.
I wanted to remove the discs as well, so I will need to release the caliper.
Can this be done without disconnecting the brake pipe. On most cars you can usually swing the caliper out of the way without the need to disconnect the brake lines, although it looks like the 993 has a metal brake pipe that would bend if the caliper was pulled off the disc.

Thanks Phil

from memory, removing the strut clip will give you the movement you need. the strut mount point is a complete loop though, so the pipe won't come completely free. there is a very much unapproved modification which involves a dremel on this loop... but I'll let you find that on the internet ! you shouldn't need to get that drastic for the disks alone.
