front bumper mounting

Does this qualify as the most obscure request to date? [;)]

Anyone got the front bumper off their car at the moment? would they care to check a few dimensions for me whilst they are at it? (or do you have a 'spare' car lying about in a dismantled state?) Let me know if you can oblige and I'll tell you what I need to know. It won't take long and I won't even hold you responsible if you get the measurements wrong and my plan goes awry !!! []

OK, I'll give you a clue - it's to do with towing points for sprinting the car. I don't want marshalls hooking up their tow ropes to the GRP front end and pulling it off [&:]

Sian - have you looked at those headlamp washers yet, because you'd be able to get these measurements when the bumper comes off ?

As a Marshal and a 924 driver I am a little insulted that you think we marshals would not know how to attach a rope to any car not just a 924. When recovering a car we always try very hard not to damage the car anymore than the **** that crashed it. I have received much praise from drivers for the way I have recovered their cars from difficult places without damage. If you come to Gurston Down I will be happy to prove it to you.

Please don't be insulted. My concern is that the standard towing point on the front is obscured by the grp front-end, hence I can't see where you'd attach a rope. Have a look at the pics here

The comment about marshalls attaching a rope to anywhere they can find and possibly causing damage was actually made by an MSA scrutineer last weekend when I discussed towing points for sprinting (because the blue book makes no specific reference to them)

Can I suggest you paint the towing eye a bright colour, different to the car body. You could also put a large arrow on the underside of the bumper pointing to the towing eye. This could be done with insulating tape for the event only, if the car is also your daily runner.
Marshals at sprints and hillclimbs are used to dealing with cars with GRP frontends.
May I wish you enjoyable and safe sprinting.

The problem is the original towing eye is behind the GRP panel so it's not accesible, hence I'm constructing another one that mounts on the original bumper brackets. What I don't want to have to do is dismantle the front end to take the measurements, wait whilst I get one fabricated andt then put it back together, because I just know something will get damaged whilst it's in bits [].

Of course I could have done all this whilst the front was being painted a few weeks ago [] [] . If only.....

cheers .......... Phil

I painted the towing hook red on mine, its pretty visible.

Terry, were you at gurston on the 18th of june when the porsche guys were out? I was driving the "BAR F1" coloured 924 that nearly required the use of the towing hook on my first timed run... Too fast into the Karousel so I ended up with a piece of tarmac wedged up the front crossmember up to the engine! Still managed to get a good 2nd run in after sufficiently scareing myself in the first.
