Front driving lamp removal.????

Ok Folks ..
This question goes out to all you S2 + turbo owners...
How do you remove the front driving / fog lamp assembly.?? Preferably without breaking it.???[;)]
I need to change a bulb , but dont seem to be able to get the darnd things out / to bits.????
 
remove the two screws holding the end covers on the lamp. Then you expose 6 phillips screws, one on each corner. NOT the centre two (they adjust the lamp). remove those corner 4. You may have fun doing that as the exposure to water down there means a lot of rust! After that, they are free, but you may still need some force to seperate the two halves from the seal. I don't really know how to tell you to put that force on it, except DONT lever from behind the clip which provides the nut for the end covers. They are fragile, and break easily if you force them!
 
Mike's procedure is spot on. I think you will have problems, unless a PO has put copper grease on there in the past. You can't use heat because the screws you are trying to get out are in a brass thread that is inserted into plastic and if you heat it the insert will release. You'd get the lamp out without damage that way but you'd need a new backing.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Perhaps the Wurth Ice-Hockey Roast-Off stuff Carl was talking about would help?[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
When the rusty screws do break off (as they always seem to by the tales we hear), then you will have to carefiully drill the stubs out [:eek:] and reattach them using a self tapper.

If you shatter the mounting lugs, then a new lens is about £80 from the usual places. The rear section is not available seperately so you have to buy a complete light unit if you knacker that bit up.

Use stainless screws and lots of grease when re attaching
 
I thought someone posted on here (or maybe Titanic) about 2 months ago that they found just the back bowls somewhere.

If the screws are stuck then go to a rust remover. Here in the States we have this product called PB Blaster. It is a different penetrating goop than the normal. If you have it or something similar over there, give it a try. If you do snap the machine screw off it is time to slow way down. You can try a screw extractor but odds are it will be a total failure. The key is to keep the heat down. You need to take short steps and let everything cool down inbetween. The gray bucket is made out of some sort of reinforced plastic material and heat will cause the brass boss cast into it, that your screw is stuck in, to let loose from the plastic and then you are in trouble.

Everyone with Turbo/S2 fog/driving lenses should go out to their cars, take the screws out and lube them up with anti-seize grease. Will save a lot of future headaches.
