Front shock absorbers

I had the front inserts replaced in Feb 02 with, I believe, Boge gas struts. Having only covered about 7,000 miles I was surprised to be told at an OPC inspection at the weekend that one of them had failed. It has been suggested that I have no claim against the manufacturer or retailer as they are over a year old.

Does anyone have any views/ similar experience on this?

I assume I need to replace the pair to get consistent handling. What should I replace them with to (a) improve handling and (b) get more than 7,000 miles out of them?

Regards

Just replace the one. 7000 miles on the other will work just fine with a new one - unless you rallycross or something.

Upgrade would be Bilstein (HD or Sport) or perhaps Koni make an adjustable yellow that fits the Boge strut - but then you really want to replace the rears also. Bilstein inserts average out at around £100 per corner. Unless all your shocks are worn out though the Boge dampers are just fine for regular or even spirited driving - the were standard on the later year 3.2s.

Re longevity, unfortunately sometimes these things just fail.

Mike I would drop Boge/Bilstein a line and see what sort of response you get , rather than buy a new shock (depending on what has failed) just get it re-valved with the other one as a pair, weigh the car first and give that figure to whoever is repairing them.

Good reply Bones,
Most manufactures would welcome the feed back and should,- should offer a replacement.
To simply throw it away is madness.
Make sure you speak with the Organ-grinder and not one of the Monkeys when you ring.

Thanks guys for the advice. I will look into re-valving as a sensible solution.... and contact the manufacturer.
