Front shocks sourced, where best for rears

Came across a set of new OE sachs shocks for the front of my 86 Turbo. Been wanting new suspension but I like the standard ride height and stiffness so didnt want to go for aftermarket, just wanted to refresh my tired old ones. Lucky fleabay find to get these original units for my car. Be as well getting set or rears also, where is a good bet for sachs OE or equivelent. Also my strut to hub bolts look quite crusty, are the a problem bolt to get off, should I tackle it with heat or do they generally come off fairly easily. Am I right in assuming the are not eccentric bolts (i.e they have no effect on camber like the wishbone rear mount does), so can I just whip them on and off and get on with it. Also the rear shocker bolts (body and trailing arm) are they problematic. Actually just looking for any pointers anybody has and also advice on what else I should change whilst doing this, should I change the top mounts on the front as matter of course or should I just see what they are like on strip down. Any pointer welcome guys, thanks

I am hoping new standard will transform ride and handling of my turbo, has anybody gone down the standard route, were you happy with the results. Cheers all

Can't help you too much, other than wanted to say my newly acquired S2 is all standard, had new shocks all round about 8k miles ago. The ride is really nice but it still stays flat and planted on the twisty stuff. Seems to be a nice balance between sporty and smooth ride.

Ref the top mounts, personally I would do them if they're original ones. I don't know if it's same for 944 as on my MK1 Golf but on that you just need to look at the clearance between the top plate and the rubber. If you can get your finger between the two then they need replacing!

They also cost about £250 a side for top mounts from Porsche!

Ah, erm... ok, maybe yours are ok still then diabloam! [:D] My golf ones were about £20 lol

While the front is in bits I would replace the ARB bushes and fit 968 castor mounts, if they have not all been done recently.

Hey all, castor mounts seemed ok when I put neew wishbones on about a year ago, do they make a huge difference and tighten up the front end? Alasdair, hell Porsche prices never cease to amaze me, dont think there is too much wrong with my ones as to be honest there aint any clonks and that up front and they seem free with weight on and when jacked up so suspect I WONT be doing them, lol. Still away with work but prob give you shout when enroute home about water pump etc. Trying to get all these jobs as well as the belts and pump so can be ready fort summer, been happy to keep car off road during the winter as the roads are crap anyway. Any suggestions for rear standard shocks? Thanks all

They will make a massive difference, yes. The 968 parts (whichve superceded the 944 parts on PET) are mostly metal, whereas the original parts are mostly rubber.

Squidgy...

Alasdair (Sulzeruk) fitted these to my s2 yesterday

Not entirely needed to this specification on my car but I fancied something different. I didn't pay that price advertised! Alasdair also had in stock the 968 castor mounts shown in the posting above if you wanted them.

I have a set of standard 968 ARB mounts here Alex if you need them. Good quality ones, same as Porscheshop sell but cheaper!

Alasdair, guess it makes sense to take a pair of these of you since I am going to be taking the front struts off anyway, so might as well whilst in there, they certainly look more substantial. Are you still sound to source that OE water pump also. Aint going to put car back on the road till get all these jobs done, Sorned the now so no tax till I finally finish car, running like a dream thgough so with new belts and that I can have fun without worrying. Need a set of rear standard or mildly firmer dampers. Are they different for my year like the front (suspension offset), any suggestions on model and source? Looking forward to punting about in summer with roof out (bit of a laugh considering where I stay, lol). How much for the pump and the castor mounts, so can get it ordered soon as I am home. Long trip away this one but good money so cant moan! but itching to get back, really missing the garage (bird thinks I am idiot cause spend half my time there when off). PM or post back when you get the chance. Sussed the leg bolts are eccentric so guess will have to mark them up whilst doing this, are they prone to snapping, same question about rears. Thanks for all the help guys, cheers the now
