Front shocks

My Boge front shocks ('87 Carrera Sport) are up for replacement and I understand that I can opt for Boge, Bilstein, Koni or other inserts.

Any views on the pros and cons of the rival brands would be welcome.
 
I went from soft Boge to hard Konis and never looked back.

How much the positive, precise feel has improved due to Konis and how much it's improved just becos they're new is a matter for debate.

But I'm happy with Konis
 
I have adjustable Koni all round (just like my previous car), 'cause I like a fairly hard suspension setup. No real experience with alternatives.
 
Porsche decided the Boge gas shock was good enough not to offer the Bilstein sport as an option on the later 3.2s. Boge are perfectly adequate for road and occasional track day use. That being said, they are definitely softer than Koni yellow (ie adjustable sport) or Bilstein HD which will offer better body control at the expense of ride harshness. IMHO the Boge are well matched in bounce and rebound to standard torsion bar rates while the other options, while offering something a little different when used with standard t-bar sizes, are perhaps better suited to bigger t-bars.

I have had my torsion bars uprated - means less body roll, but a slightly softer straight ahead (don't understand that bit, but that is how it felt to me).

Gathering information for my winter refurb of the front suspension (post fuel leak fix - see earlier posts).

What 'upgraded' torsion bars do you have, and what Koni Adjustables (or is there only one type) ?

Do you have the standard anti-roll bar and bushings ?

What other bushings / strut brace / monoballs etc. etc. do others have (if they are reading this) ?

Got it in to my head (after reading pelican) that I will take out all the fron suspension and refurb, along with turbo tie-rods etc.

Planning on doing exactly the same on my SC this winter John. I plan to strip and refurbish the rear suspension too. I'm going to go up a little in torsion bar size but leave the roll bars alone.
 
In direct answer the CS, is fitted with Bilstein Sports as standard. Also, being lighter than most regular Carrera 3.2's you would assume a harsh ride. In fact it is a little firm, but not over damped, so I would recommend. If you want a harsh ride, go down to your local BMW dealer, book a test drive in a Mini Cooper fitted with Sports Suspension "plus" and enjoy the ride.

Totally mis-matched set up.

Question not directed to me, but I would highly recommend the Elephant Racing polybronze bushings. Expensive, but the best product on the market. No detriment to ride quality, no deflection under load, servicable and easy to fit. I can't understand why I used the hard rubber bushes for the rear springplates now that I have polybronze in the front. Probably a moment of wallet shock at the sticker price. Also, if you uprate front t-bars you must do the backs as well otherwise you will be way out of balance in springrates.

Happy to discuss any other suspension set-up questions.

I have a strut brace, and I believe the t-bars are turbo ones (my memory has it's moments), both fitted some years ago by RUF in Weybridge - which shows how long ago.

Can't remeber what else.

If they are Turbo t-bars then the fronts are the same. Only the rears are bigger - 26mm. So now you know.

Thanks for the info.

Have looked at Elephant Racing, and will seriously consider (price ???).

Would be interested in getting info from more owners on what works, and what doesn't for the front and rear refurb.

Like the TRG 935 setup, but only street driven and don't have $12,000, so dream on I suppose.

Richard - I will e-mail nearer the time if you don't mind, as I will put together my package and seek some re-assurance before going ahead.

May also be looking for some help (hands-on or online) from others at the time.

Hollow torsion bars are also an option Ian if saving weight is an issue, if you are thinking of changing roll bars I would check the suspension info at Pelican and Rennlist first as this device has the ability to really change the handling of the car whereas torsion bars are a proven upgrade for street car owners seeking a firmer more responsive ride. I would say Bilstein 'sport' shocks would be a good choice.
