Front speaker fitting

Having read the tech article on front speaker replacement by Maurice, I have been encouraged to have a go myself. I've got Rainbow CS265 Vanadium Profi components to go in, but have a few questions. A thread by Oliver Thomas indicated that 6.5" speakers will fit without cutting, but is there a need for a fitting ring or spacer of any sort? What other tricks of the trade should I bear in mind? Also in routing the cables to the cross-over, is it just a case of cutting a hole in the door card to pass them through and taping the wires to the back of the card?
 
Hi There I fitted the cross overs like this and enlarged the hole for the door pull to run them behind. I had the cross over this way round so that the pockets could still be used without knocking the wires.
