Front splitter peeling - need options...

Hi all - been years I think since my last post, insane! ...just shows how little time I spend with my 911 these days :(

Anyway, got a question hoping you guys can wade in on...

My factory painted front splitter has started peeling and looks awful - so I am looking to get it fixed in the next week or so ready for the Corwall gathering. However, I have been told that plastic front splitters are not suitable for painting - by everyone but Porsche (who quoted me over £1100 for a new one!!!!). You can buy OE ones on design911 for £160 but again they say they can't be painted.

So I am looking at getting the OE Aerokit front splitter alone (without the rear spoiler) for £295, and then having this painted. Yes I know Porsche say you shouldn't do this as it changes the aero-balance of the car, but given I already increased the rake etc of the car at Center Gravity, I really don't see a bit more front end downforce is going to do anything significantly untoward.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Alex

Surely a local bodyshop will oblige? It is not a part of the car that is easily seen and with a quick rub down and blow over would that not be enough? Your original spec made the car special because of details like this so it would be a shame to lose the colour coding.

Hi guys!

Turns out the OE Aerokit splitter is £700 not £295 (which is in fact a copy in fiberglass which would smash to pieces the first time i scrape it!)

Stripping down the old one is apparently not an option, so I am going to see what they can do with just a regular OE splitter.

Hi Alex,
I can't see why refinishing your aero splitter is not an option since any good paint shop should be able to rectify it for you. If you're having difficulty in getting it done in Reading, why not leave it with me when you come down to North Devon in a few days time and I'll let my guy in Barnstaple have a go - I can assure you he is very well versed in repairing colour-coded 997 Turbo splitters. [;)]

BTW - I only sold my spare aero splitter just recently - it was advertised on this forum too! I had 3 when I was running my TTS - one on the car, another in the paint shop and the third, a stock black plastic turbo one I used for tour runs. This is slightly narrower and therefore less prone to scuffing, although mine was looking a tad moth-eaten the last time I saw it! [:D]
Regards,

Clive

Hi Alex
apologies for hijacking your thread - any thoughts of organising another of your top flight club runs from Pangbourne - or have you relocated ?
best

Ordered a new like-for-like OE front plastic splitter from OPC Reading for £193 (minus 10% PCGB discount) - should be here early next week. Am arranging for a local Bodyshop to apply the flexible primer and then paint in Artic Silver thereafter - albeit I think that will probably cost more than the part did!

That's a shame! Must start paying more attention here...

Hi Tony

My car has been SORNed for a while now as I am just not driving it these days. I was using it for the school run but got fed up swerving for potholes and driving through muddy rivers all the time, so have got myself one of the new VW Tiguan R's which is much more suitable for family activities. As such the 911 has just been a garage Queen for months now. I have been seriously looking at selling it, but had a bit of a spanner in the works when I found out the car has recorded some scary over-revs (like 9.5k rpm) only 2 driving hours ago - which is impossible given the previous 6 months I have only been driving it from home to school and back and the max speed I can get up to is 60mph. 9500rpm can only be achieved by dropping down to 2nd gear at 90mph or 130mph in 3rd gear - so I have literally NO IDEA how that's been recorded in the logs.

So long story short, hopefully come dryer/warmer weather I will start driving it again and with it arrange a couple of Reading runs...

Hi alex
yes life gets in the way especially with a young (ish) family
Recall you were seriously looking to trade the 911 a couple of years ago - no idea myself on the overrevs sounds very peculiar - hope you get some space and time to get her back on the road
Tony

Final solution: replacement (like for like) splitter from OPC @ £170 (with PCGB discount) then took splitter to local paint shop where they applied flexible primer and then the Porsche paint code @ £240.
