Front strut top mounting

Hi everyone.
My 997 C4 GTS has just had its first service at 22months and 12k miles and I have been given an advisory that the front strut top mounting has a split.
But as there is no knocking there is nothing to worry about and to look at it again in 6 months.
Has anyone else had this problem at such a low mileage?
Should it be covered by warranty?
What is likely to cause the problem.
Any advice is appreciated.

Suspension top mounts do take a bit of a pounding with the potholed roads we are all currently suffering. You need to ask you PC if they can be replaced under warranty, but I suspect it may come under a wear and tear heading. Worth a try though. [8|]

I had a similar observation on my 2010 Turbo with 22,500 miles....no action and when I asked whether this was normal, they replied yes. They then volunteered that when not used the rubbers can split....to which I commented that it is used and they then suggested when it is driven fast the same thing can happen. It left me wondering how one does drive a Porsche.

It is under PUAW still although no further mention....

I think 22 months and 12k miles would be classed as premature wear and tear and thus replaced under warranty. This was certainly the case with worn/knocking diagonal arms on my front suspension which were replaced at around 30k miles (3 years) under warranty.

Agree, it's premature wear and tear IMO and should be covered under warranty. My C4 GTS first service is due next month @8.5k miles so will see what my OPC comes back with.

TBH it is a common issue and not a hugely expensive DIY fix. If it's a warranty job then all good, if not then it will be a few ££'s

Not an insignificant DIY job though, as you need a fair bit of kit, knowledge and a camber gauge. [:-]

I know, it's poor form this year! The boss of the household keeps giving me too many jobs to do [:)]

I've put nearly 6k on the Boxster but I will be looking to reverse this trend with a trip to the Italian Lakes in it to stretch it's legs [:)]

You need to get out more.....[;)]

It's not that bad Clive - I would always recommend a geo check when any suspension components are changed and that bit of it is not really DIY.

I've not changed a 997 top mount (yet [8|]) but have done many on other vehicles and this involved dissembling suspension components, use of a spring compressor and a special tool to remove the spring retaining bolt. Of course, it might be easier on a 911! [:(]

Thanks for all the replies.
Having been back in touch with my OPC and voiced my concerns particularly as we are going on a 3 week trip to Italy very shortly and will do 4000 miles, they have agreed to replace
them under warranty and booked in for next week.
The GTS did an excellent job last year on a similar trip and we are really looking forward to doing it again. Cannot praise the car enough.
Comfortable touring and also great on the Alpine passes, fantastic engine sound with the sports exhaust.
