front suspension help please

big al

New member
hi

my 944s 1987 past its MOT today but under advisory items they have noted deterioration of front right suspension bushes, they all look in poor condition to me so i think that i should replace them all including the ones for the anti roll bar, is there a complete kit to do such a job? would i need a press for removing and fitting them or would a vice do the job?

can anyone give me a list of how many bushes i need

thanks for any help Alan

The ARB bushes are easy and can be done yourself. There are two at each end of the ARB, and two part way along holding it to the underside of the car, Jack the entire front end up to take the weight off the wheels

The caster bush at the back of each wishbone is also easy, but you will need a realignment afterwards.

The other bushes look a bit more complicated so I haven't attempted them [&:]

For a full list and good prices call Adrian at Exeter OPC

It's worth replacing the brackets that hold ARB bushes on too if they look corroded.Shortly after i bought my s2 i replaced the brackets as the drivers side had completely cracked just under the first bolt.

hi

after further inspection i have noticed that the wishbones are aluminum so i don't think that the bushes will be replaceable ( i hope i am wrong as that will be expensive 2 front wishbones [:(])

hi

i might be using the wrong name i am calling them wishbones but it is called control arm on pet (thanks pikey7 for that web link)

my car is a 1987 model 944s, that has aluminium control arms and as far as i can see they come with the bushes fitted at the factory, is there a exchange parts on this item or is there anyone that refurbishes them

I'm waiting for Fen to pipe up. I know he looked at fitting poly bushes but they didn't fit right for some reason as I recall.

I must admit, I keep thinking about getting a set of the racers edge bushes, and then I think again to just replacing them with the moly arms if they ever go pop.

I changed my front ones, first for weltmeister and then I made some from delrin or similar. I don't recall the originals being especially hard to remove.

I'me getting someone to machine some from Delrin for me for f/r anti roll bars.

Fen is 'oop north' collecting his new hearse (530d touring) [:D]

Yes, I just felt a 'whoosh' of air and a cloud of black diesel heading south down the M1, so he should be home soon :ROFLMAO:

PowerFlex are supposed to be making me a set of bushes to try to cure the problem once and for all. They are going to make Delrin washers to support the top hat section I believe.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I will keep you posted when I get them and get a few miles on the car (it might be a while because they seem to need close to 2,000 miles to fail (especially without the help of a trackday) and the hearse is looking like a much more attractive proposition to drive in cruddy weather.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The ends should be OK but how will you get the middle ones round the corners? will they be split?

If you really want to go to town, http://www.lindseyracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=LR&Category_Code=944SWAYBARSMISC these brackets from Lindesy Racing are really cheap and tighten the whole thing up.

I've got them on both 944s http://www.cannell.co.uk/images/Cannell_web/944T%2067%203.jpg and recommend them as a cheap 'improvement'

Rick.

Beaky has them as well and does seem that little bit tighter as a result.

It is a shame that we can't save a file on how a car feels so that it can be compared at a later date, just to see how much it has changed. The trouble with making many small changes, over a period of time, is that you don't always appreciate how the sum of the small changes has changed the overall feel of the car.

I know that Beaky is getting better as, when I drove WUF some time ago, Beaky seemed very floppy in comparison. A more recent drive in WUF didn't seem so dramatically different to Beaky (suspension wise at least) so I can only assume that the various works undertaken have improved Beaky (This is further assuming that WUF hasn't deteriorated to Beakies level of course.)
