Front Suspension Noise

Hi all,

Over the last few weeks I have noticed some quiet rattles eminating from the front end that I can feel slightly through the steering when I go over bumps, particularly slow speeds over uneven ground, etc.

I have consulted bentley and 101 projects and from what I can gather this could either be track rod ends or ball joints. Is any wear evident from a simple inspection with the wheels off?

Does anyone have experience with the symptoms when these parts start to wear and any experience of the work involved in their replacement (how many spanners)?

Thanks all,

Les.

Hi Les roll bar bushes are another cause of this type of noise you dont have to have the wheels off to check everything but must have enough hight. Support on stands ect. Better on a lift.regards Berny.

Thanks Berny. I have some axle stands so will have a look this weekend.

What do I need to look for with both the ball joints and bushes? Am I looking for excessive play or just a sight check to look for cracking and deterioration?

Rgds,

Les.

Get the wheels in the air and ask a friendly helper to rock the wheel in each plane whilst you check for movement at the various joints.

However, some of the joints will need a high force too detect play. A friendly garage will be able to get the car up on a ramp and use a lever to apply a higher load through the wheel (like the MoT test).
