front targa seal doesn't fit!

Having purchased new front screen seal and rear roll over bar seal for the my targa, I have successfully installed rear seal only to find that the front one does not fit when offered up before applying the glue. It is narrower across the top of the front screen by some 7-8 cms and shorter down the 'A' pillar, leaving a gap of 3 cms to the door seal.

I have found some information on the web about changes in parts:

www.911t.org/articles/targatop/targa_seal1.htm

It seems as though the original part has been superseded - see article for more detail. I will of course be contacting the supplier of the seals to enquire about the differences, but would like to know if anyone has come across this previously?

The seal could possibly be stretched across the top frame, with additional pieces cut from the old seal to make up the missing space at the bottom of the 'A' pillar, however that is a very last resort and I would like to fit a correctly sized seal to do the job as intended - possibly ordering one from another supplier to see if it is any different.

Mark I've got a '78 SC Targa so I assume our seals are the same. I fitted new seals about five years ago before our seals were superceded but I thought the only difference beteween the new and old seals was that the new seals were thicker and required some trimming. I don't recall that there should be any difference in length as the replacement seals are from the 964 I believe. As the shells of the SC, 3.2 and 964 are the same, then you would think the sizes of the seals would remain the same. Having fitted Targa seals, my tip is do a dry run, stretch the seals into position, mark them and then glue them in position, they definitely won't work properly if bits are glued onto them, they have to be stretched into position. Consult Southbound or Forest Fine for details on changes to the seal's spec.

Many thanks. It's a bit of information that you wish you knew before you started the project - even trimming a bit of the thickness away. I'll be ringing Rob at Forest Fine.

Hi. I used evo-stick impact adhesive. It works on a lot of things. It is possibly a question to ask another though. Try one of the specialists or a Porsche centre - never hurts to ask.
