Front top mounts

Not sure if this subject has been discussed before but need some advice on what to do as the TT997.1 is going in for its last service under the OPC warranty.

For a number of months now I have had knocking sounds coming from the front axle especially in cold weather and going slowly with the wheel turning. First I thought it was the suspension but Chris from COG alleges the culprits are the top mounts on my 1st Gen car. He says that they are worn out and have not lasted well on the 1st Gen 997. As a matter of fact Porsche changed the design for the 2nd Gen and they seem to be holding up much better.
Questions:
- Has anyone had the same issue and what was done about them by yourself or the OPC?
- Did anyone have the mounts replaced with the same 1st Gen mounts or did they get replaced with the newer 2nd Gen mounts?
- When talking to PARR for some other work, they suggested replacement with 'Stainless Steel Spherical Bearint Top Mounts' which would last forever. All very well but ride quality would permantly be moved into track racer category as some suggest.

I have no intention of doing track days with the car but always drive the car spirited here in the UK and even more so on the continent. I live in London where speed bumps are the norm and not the exception and it is hard enough to snail across those in the given set-up. So, any empirical evidence on what was done for you would help since I need to be prepared for the discussion with the OPC and my choices.

Thanks,
Max

Max,

Top mount defects are fairly common on Gen 1 cars. I believe Gary had his replaced when he had his turbo.
I assume they will be changed for the latest parts by Porsche under warranty, but your OPC will confirm this.
I personally would steer (ha, ha [8|]) clear of spherical bearings, because, as you rightly observe, they are likely to lack sufficient compliance for road use.
May be worth a quick 'phone call to Chris Franklyn to discuss your options with him.

Regards,

Clive.

Thanks Clive,

Chris confirmed that going with the 2nd Gen Porsche mounts should resolve the issues. Now, let's see if the OPC agrees.

I did indeed have my top mounts changed (40k miles)- Chris did them for me at a very good rate as it would knock the Geo out once again..
I took my car to him as I could hear the clonk from the front and as far as I'm aware they aren't a warranty item as it's wear and tear...

Be careful it's not just the Ackerman making the cars steering jump, shows up much more in the cold and especially when reversing on a lock...
