Front wheel bearings

Chaps,

A quickie. My S2 was MOT'd about a month ago, and the inspector said that the front wheel bearings were worn. Not badly enough to warrant a note on the MOT, but he did say it would be worth changing them soon to keep the front of the car sharp.

I have taken the dust caps off today and tightened them up, but am wondering about changing them.

How hard is it? I'd have thought it wouldn't be hard. The procedure in the Porsche manual talks of at least 4 special tools and heating the hub up, but it looks very like the arrangement for the back of a Golf (i.e. no drive in the middle) which can be done with a punch, a medium-sized hammer, and some patience. Is this the case?

Any more advice?

(Also, the ECP site gives the price for front wheel bearings as being £19.95p, +VAT. I presume this is for one side, and I'd need two to do both sides?)

Oli.

Not a bad job, I did mine with no special tools whatsoever.
The tricky bit is fitting the new races in the hubs. I put the hubs in the oven and the races in the freezer (was rebuilding the whole area at the time), although they still stopped halfway into the hubs and needed a bit of coaxing into the hub.
The wheel bearing itself comes apart really easily so inspect it first before you commit, in hindsight mine would probably been fine with just a regrease for many years. But whilst your in there etc.
