Fuel Consumption 993 v 996

Not that you buy a PORSCHE and worry about the above, but comparing my 993 Targa which used to return well over 30mpg (best 32 mpg) on a 350 mile round trip.

My C4 barely managed a little over 25mpg on the same run, giving the route was M1, M25, & A3(M) where I did achieve some consistent speed I was amazed at the difference.

Anybody care to offer what they achive on a long distance trip ?

My fuel consumption is pretty poor. The 911SS used to get about 25mpg on average but the 1998 996 C4 gives 19.2mpg according to the computer. On a run with a lot of motoway driving it averages 27mpg. I put the poor mpg down to the four wheel drive, cold weather, leaving it running for five mins before I set off in the morning and now using it for very small journeys of two miles each day and some heavy right foot treatment - And Yes I know this is not good for it. The car has done 130k on the clock now. The previous owner did all motorway miles and drove to Paris most weeks so whilst very high miles the car feels and looks and responds like a car with less than 50k miles on the clock. It doesn't use any oil allthough there are a couple of very small oil leaks underneath.

I have a non varioram 993 C2 man, I do 90% 'B' road journeys and 10% urban, with this mix I always get something just over 25mpg. If I exlcude the urban bit, I seem to be getting around 27.5mpg, and I don't spare it!

Average over my first few months with a manual 02 Targa is just over 25.5mpg over 5k miles. A fair bit of that is a 20 mile cross country commute each way. On "long" runs have seen 29/30mpg on a tankful a few times.
Overall about the same as my old 968 sport but with a bit more grunt.

The above numbers are "physical" mpg - I have noticed a difference between the computer mpg and "physical" measured by as much as 2 mpg on a tankful - not sure whether its the electronics or me not brimming it consistently !
Anyone else seeing similar effects ?

not that anyone's measuring such things of course..........

My 996tt returns a usual 21mpg for motorway with a bit of B roads, Motorway cruising (80mph) sometimes get 28mpg although an eventfull day around the the Yorks moors did return 12mpg[]
I did the physical mpg calculation a short while ago and it came to 23mpg, so not miles out from what the CPU said?

I should have mentioned earlier that my C4 is a tiptronic which must make a difference. As there is a fair degree of slip and power used to drive that. I am hoping when it gets warmer the MPG will improve.

Had a long weekend to the Oldtimers at the 'ring with the Scottish region in my 993C4 and averaged almost identical consumption to a friends 996C4 Tip at 20.3mpg.
Consolled ourselves that a 2.4S was getting around 14mpg.

Hey Mike, our cruise (!) down to the Oldtimer 'ring managed to get 28mpg. After a bit of 'ring lapping, this dropped to 17mpg!
On a run my 4S will do upto 30mpg, round town 17/19mpg.

Grahame, we were suffering from that well known affliction -heavy right foot[:)]
Filled up just before spending a morning at the old circuit and parked up in the afternoon to watch the racing. Returned to the hotel after a round trip of 80miles and needed 40litres of optimax to brim the tank again[]
By my reckoning thats around 9mpg, so over the whole trip 20 was pretty fair[;)]

Your all obviously girlies with that right foot....my average mileage 18.6 & all Optimax...OUCH !!!

I got very similar figures with my 993 C4, to those quoted by Graham, during a very fast drive over to the Nurburgring AvD Oltimer Grand Prix in August 2003
