fuel consumption figures help needed

hot topic at moment I know but I'm thinking of buying the wife a cayenne 3.2 or s and wanted true fuel figures. What would I be better of buying given we do the occasional long run but mainly round town driving and currently stick 50 quid in the tank of a land rover disco a week. I'm curious how much this would jump by given each model on average so weather its worth doing and what model 2 go 4? Also does anyone bother with the warranty? I have a 997 and have just renewed that. Cheers

David .... Hi,

Around town you can expect between 15 and 20 mpg, providing you don't stamp on the gas every time you pull away from the lights. On a run mid to high 20's, again providing you don't cane it. My last 500 m'way miles have been between 80 and 85 with a return of 23.5, from my 3.2. Although there's not a huge difference between the 3.2 and 4.5. The direct injection models offer slightly better economy over the original version.

As for the warranty, very much personal choice. £800.00 for a year is very expensive though.

Best regards

many thanks paul. i have a 997 s and have just renewed the warranty and i know there is much debate as to weather or not to bother. i guess on balance a £895 bill as opposed to a 15k new engine bill is a no brainer but renewing 2 warrantys a year is excessive to say the least. im torn between a range rover and a cayenne. im a porsche man through and through but im concerned about running costs of a porsche as a family car although i know the build quality on land rovers is terrible (ive had two discoverys). my 997 wont do anymore than 5k per year so a service every 2 years and new brakes every 20k miles is more than acceptable. im thinking spending 2,500 every 2 years on service for a cayenne plus £800 a year for a cayenne may be a bridge too far. the wife does circa 10k per year. what are your experiences re ownership?

David
I too have a Cayenne and a 997S. The Cayenne with direct injection gives better fuel consumption than the previous version, we're getting 21mpg average over 23k. First service at 20k was fixed price plus pads. Personally I think it's a better bet than a Rangey, and chealer to run.

many tks peter. can i ask is your cayenne s a 4.5 or a 4.8? also the other thought i had was to fit a cayenne with an LPG kit. Have u ever considered this yourself? are there any real draw backs with having this? i also wasnt going to bother with the warranty on the basis that if i bought a rangey then i would not have the option probable of a warranty if i bought a 2nd hand one. im thinking that 30k from a opc shud buy me a 4.5 s with circa 20k miles being an 05/06 model. many tks for your previous thought with regards this

the other thing peter is you say "direct injection models". is that the newer 3.6 version or are we talking the newer 4.8 v8??

Sorry David, missed your message, been away, so a bit delayed response. We have the 4.8 V8 with direct injection. Never considered lpg mainly because it would invalidate the warranty and depending where it was positioned the additional tank would compromise the load space.

hi there welcome back! funnily enough i test drove a 3.6 57 plate cayenne v6 today and i loved it but the missus prefers the range rover sport we tested with the new diesel v8 engine. i much prefer the build quality of the cayenne but the engine in the sport is very good. i havnt tried the cayenne s yet and the dealer suggested we do exactly that but i think the landrover may just win this one. meanwhile, i managed to badly curb one of the alloys Y"day on the 997s so having a mobile guy turn up tomorrow to repair that and refurb the others. £65 per wheel...thought that was ok

sorry i know this is an oldish thread, but just wondered as i am also after a cayeene, which model engine to go for.
ideally was thinking the 3.2 model as it seems a little better on fuel ???
was looking at either a 2004-2006 type model,
on what engines does the direct injection come out on? as this is the more economical engine ? would prefer this one if my budget can stretch to it.
currently in an 03 range rover vogue, love the car to bits, especially the interior, but its not that reliable :(
so hence the possible change.

any pointer you could give on the above or any other relative info would be great, on what to look out for on different years and models.
