Fuel Gauge/Computer Glitch

Hi Chaps, can anybody help here?

My car (2003 Carrera 2) has a tendency not to register a re-fuel on the gauge and in the on board computer (fuel range). It seems to happen if I run fuel level down to less than 100 miles range remaining.

I filled up last night when the low fuel warning light was on and drove home 24 miles without the fuel gauge moving, the warning light did not extinguish or the computer range alter.

The first time this happened I was away from home and did not know what would happen. I called my OPC who, although not 100% certain, convinced me that the car would be fine to continue the journey. I carried on and, eventually, the fault corrected itself and the fuel gauge showed full again. I tell you its not funny travelling on the motorway with an indicated range of 9 miles.

I am thinking perhaps a loose/intermittent connection although this seems to be happening every time I fill up from a low fuel level.

Thoughts please.

Regards

They all do that afaik.
i think the tank is saddle shaped so you have to refill completely to register a full tank.
As it comes down the level is dictated by the computer measuring fuel use; not a tradtitional
floaty thing on the end of a stick.
One model is even worse because the gearbox (?) is bigger so the saddle effect is more pronounced.

This is a well known problem.

Tech Master 'Richard' has posted on this issue previously.

If you have a look at the 996 Technical articles: 'Carrera 4 Faulty Fuel Gauge Readings' It gives a full details. The prblem is worse for a C4 than a C2 such as yours, but is a fault that I think has been rectified on a 997.

The 997 has the same problem. I remember borrowing a demo C4S PDK which was low on fuel and despite adding 20 pds worth it still registered empty and range NIL. All rather embarrassing as I had to go to a funeral in it worrying, will I run out or not?
Apparently it has to see at least 20 litres before registering.

agree with previous posters, seems filling the tank rectifies the problem where as a quick splash and dash doesn't

Nope, filling tank doesn't do it. I have a full tank right now but fuel low warning lamp is still on, 24 miles after filling it brim full (£72, ouch!).

This is the third or fourth time it has happened now. The only time I do a splash and dash is if I can't get Super at the filling station and I haven't got time/range to seek some out, otherwise its fill it up!

I now know that it isn't going to stop on me but its annoying and embarrassing.

Stuart's is a C2, so it doesn't have the C4 'saddle' tank.

But it sounds like this to me:

Yep, that's exactly it! Funny how my OPC didn't recognise the problem when I explained it to them.

How about a 'how to' article, or am I being too demanding? Sounds like its a DIY proposition.

You're damned good you are. Excellent resources, well impressed.
