fuel gauge errors

I have owned 3 944 cars and all had the same issue. when full the gauge only reads 3/4 and then spends a long time around the 1/2 tank reading.

is it a simple fix i.e is float full of petrol due to age of car or is it electrical?

Interesting. I was wondering the same yesterday.

When full my S2 will go a whisker over the 3/4 mark. Never higher. I suspect that if you filled it, then topped it up bit-by-bit then it would get higher, but not sure how much higher. I've never noticed that it spends a lot of time around the 1/2 way mark, but that could be poor observational skills on my behalf.

I have also noticed that the gauge can vary quite a lot depending upon ... well, I don't know what. For instance, I left a client site yesterday afternoon and the gauge was reading half-empty. About half way through the journey I glanced at it and it was reading nearly 3/4 full. When I got home it was about 5/8th full; there was a distance of about 20 miles between that client site and home ...

Oli.

Mine's the same: don't know why it under-reads when full. It seems reasonably accurate through the lowest quarter of the scale, and to be honest that's the only time I care what the fuel gauge says.

Didn't we already cover this in "Fuel Light Chicken". Mine never reads full just 7/8. Oh and by the way 55 miles from light coming on to breakdown on normal A road driving. He says knowingly after kangarooing into the petrol station on Sunday night. That's about as close as I ever want to get lol. By my reckoning that's just about 30 mpg.

Mine goes off the scale when full but stops around the 1/4 mark, either the bottom of the tank is HUGE or that's as low as it wants to go.

On a side note I like the way the fuel guage says 2/4 and not 1/2 [:)]

I have the same behaviour/problem as the earlier posts in this thread. When full, never reads above 3/4. Once it drops below 1/2, the gauge pretty much shows whatever it feels like "¦

My gauge does get up to the full mark but takes a couple of miles after filling. It is also really accurate right down the scale as long as I go straight! If I have around half a tank it rises an eighth of a tank going round long right handers and drops an eighth going round long left handers! Or it might be the other way about?

I would bet on the 21 year old sender being somewhat worn.

My '91 S2 shows about 7/8 when full. I've tried slowly filling it to the brim but all I got for that was some fuel odor in the car for a short time. It seems accurate lower down based on how much fuel it takes to top it up from a given point on the gauge although the top "half" seems larger than the bottom as with most vehicles. I haven't tried the fuel light yet (too cowardly).

For milage - I completed a fairly spirited trip across the mountains from Edmonton, AB to Vancouver, BC and back last August - approximately 1800 miles - averaged 31.5 mpg.

There is an article on Pelican website about guage problems - might have to join to view

My 91 S2 must be an oddity as the gauge reads full when the car is full, then accurately measure the level down to the reserve light coming on when there is about 2.5 gallons left which I think is what is stated in the handbook. My old 924S however would read full when full but after that it was anyones guess, I just re-set the trip meter and went by that.

My 924S was like that, just used to run it til the light came on lol

944 never goes above 3/4 either, drops under the red line before the light comes on and it takes about 50 miles from hitting the red before it starts the light.

I always wondered if it was just years of under filling meaning that the top of the sender corrodes, never had it out yet to check (mainly because I'd need to buy new rubber gaskets for it)

Both of mine read full when full and the Reserve light comes on when there's 8 litres left.

Any problems are simply a dirty sender or connections that need cleaning as detailed here:

Or buy a new sender altogether
