Fuel gauge problem

Has anyone out there had a problem with their fuel gauge? I filled up (brimmed) my 2003 Boxster this afternoon after the warning light came on. When I left the forecourt the gauge did not rise at all and the light stayed on.

Read through some old threads on this forum that suggest the sender / float can get stuck and could rectify itself. Took the car for a 20 mile drive round twisty B-roads and the gauge has not moved.

Is this a common fault and does it mean the fuel tank has to come out and the sender unit replaced?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The sender is accessed from the top of the tank. Fortunately this is accessed from an access panel under the battery (the battery has to come out) so hopefully not so bad a job.

Try it again though - it might just have glitched [:)]

Thanks for the advice Mark. Turned on the ignition this morning and the fuel gauge is working again [:)].

Is this likely to be a "one off" glitch or a sign that the sender unit is on its way out?

Happened every time I let the fuel level get low on my 2003 Boxster and did not fill it fully up. if I filled it completely took around a day or so to reset itself. Its not a fault they can all can do this.

after you fill the car,you must lock it down for the system to reset.

Not necessarily so, i nearly always leave the car running while i fill up (only at pay at pump with credit card type places)

I jump back in the car and rest the trip computer to zero. I've even watched the gauge rising whilst filling too.

If you fuel it with the engine running, you run the risk of the "Check Engine" light coming on - which will require a trip to the dealer to reset.
The car won't get that cold - I'd advise you to switch off.
