Fuel gauge reading

My fuel gauge often reads empty even though Ive got £15 or more of fuel in it. Then now and again it reads correctly. I seem to remember the same on my old 924 and lived with it but is there anything I can do to sort this out?[&:]

Mine only reads 3/4 even after £60 worth of fuel!!!!

An innacurate fuel level seems to be very common, the 3/4 full thing especially, normally caused by a dirty sender in the fuel tank.

There is a guide to cleaning it in the garage shop manual at http://www.clarks-garage.com, or failing that buy a new sender.

Slim, my 3/4 gauge improved over time after I started using Optimax, must be the cleaning chemicals in it. Try and keep your tank full for a while and see what happens.

I had a similar problem with my old 924 Turbo. I changed the sender unit but it didn't make a substantial difference, just slightly less erractic. I always thought it was probably an electrical problem behind the gauge.

Its soooo blomin annoying aint it, after puting 70l of fuel in the car you would think that it would atleast extend you the courtesy of reading full!!!!

I need to fix that it really pi55es me off....

If you're positive that the sender is ok then you can simply pull the needle off it's stalk and reposition it. Ther are tools available when you buy these kits to fit white dials etc.

.....and there is no worry about the fuel light coming on incorrectly, as that is controlled by the sender - not the needle position

Alternatively I can take a decent photo of mine and you can print it out and stick it over your dash after you fill up [8D]

Mine only reads completely full if I put the last bit of fuel in really slowly (so I don't often bother), however the light comes on as soon as the needle enters that zone so I guess my sender and needle position are OK.

Must give that a go. I don't recall having seen either of my 944's (previous or current) with the fuel guage above 3/4's full despite the filler pump clicking off at every fill up.
