Fuel Gauge stuck

Guys,
I'm hoping one of you good folk can help? Before I set off on a recent trip to Spa I filled the car up with fuel (not something often done). The fuel gauge went to full as normal.

After about 200 miles the gauge had dropped to 3/4 of a tank and stuck in that position. After a number of refills it stayed on 3/4 of a tank.
On the way home it stopped working completely and read empty.

When I got home I removed the sender unit which was in a sorry old state and binned it. Yesterday I collected and fitted a new sender unit from Porsche. When I started the car the gauge showed 3/4 of a tank. Suspicious I went to the garage and put £20 of fuel in. Starting the car again, no difference still 3/4 of a tank. A side note, the oil level gauge is showing full and hasn't budged in quite some time.

Has anyone any idea what's causing the problem?

Update,
I have done the following but no change :-(
  • tried an earth strap from the sender to the chassis
  • shorted the sender connection to earth - gauge reads full (as it should)
  • stripped the gauge and checked all connections
  • disconnected the feed to the oil level
All still the same 3/4 of a tank!

Any ideas :rolleyes:

Thanks chaps, I'll hang back on the call for now as I may have fixed it[:)]

Back to basics I removed all the bolts from the sender unit, left it connected and switched on the ignition. While my son watched the gauge I slowly raised and lowered the sender unit in the tak and asked what it was showing on the gauge.
All the readings came back as they should (low when lifted out and full when lowered).
When it was fully inserted into a nearly full tank the needle showed just under full. i switched off the ignition and quietly bolted the sender unit back in place.

So, at the moment all seems well, I need to see what happens as I use the juice????

My fuel problem has reappeared ie strong smell of fuel in the cab, cause is weeping fuel line behind the hot air snout feeding the injection rails. Price is a staggering £275 +vat and one has to remove the lefthand air intakes. Done a temp repair .What is the pressure in these lines that warrants swaged fittings and steel pipes?

I don't know what the fuel pressure in the pipe is but I had the same problem. One of the swaged fitting was permitting fuel to escape.
The temporary repair I carried out consisted securing a jubilee clip around the swaged fitting, cost £0.26. It has been like that for about 8 years now.
