Fuel Gauge Stuck!!!

Morning All,

I have had little fueling problem with my SC. Last weekend (Saturday 2pm) the fuel pump started to make a squeaky, whiney rattley noise. And within about 5 miles the car spluttered to a halt and would not restart, the fuel gauge was reading 1/4 tank, so I had the car towed home, ordered a new fuel pump & had to miss taking the car to brands hatch![]

Fitted the new fuel pump yesterday, added a little extra fuel I had in a can in the garage, car stared - all seemed well - no more noises from the pump.

Then drove around about 10miles, the car started spluttering again like previously and then stopped again. The fuel gauge still reading 1/4 tank... I thought hang on a mo, got my father to bring me out some fuel in a jerry can. Put some in the car, he presto the car started no probs. Put the whole 20L of fuel from the jerry can in the car and the fuel gauge still reads 1/4 tank!!!

So hence my post. My fuel gauge appears to be stuck at 1/4 tank, when the electrics are off the needle goes down to zero but flicks up to 1/4 when the ignition is on. Any ideas what could be causing this? Before I just replace the sender unit.

All comments welcome[:D]

test the sender before replacing Dan. It should read across the teminals in situ 3 ohms (approx) full and 71 ohms (approx) empty, it's safer and quicker than removing the sender. Disconnect the battery to test it and remove the electrical connector plug on the top of the sender.
Personally I would check the gauge out first, ground the live feed and see if the needle shoots round to the top of the gauge, if it does it's probably ok , if it only goes to 1/4 then it probably needs replacing or fixing.

I have the same problem with my fuel guage that most of the time its stuck on 1/4 full, have had it looked at and it worked fine until I had to refuel. Now I jut rely on resetting the trip each time a refuel! If you discover its something obvious do let me know.

Having just replaced my tank, I now find that the gauge flicks between 2/4 and Full.

Tonight it has started to just show Full all the time (returns to Empty when ignition off).

What wiring problem could this be ?

Blimey guys I 'm opening a business in fuel level fault finding! [8D] I guess tomorrow mine will go on the blink , if everything was ok before you refitted the tank Ian disconnect the battery, remove the sender and check the float is audibly moving around in the sender tube. Test with a meter as above and recheck your connections, if ther gauge simply rockets to full as soon as the ignition is turned on despite you knowing it isn't that is a wiring or ground fault, check everything again.

It would appear that I am not alone. I will check my electircal (and possibly my awful spelling!!!) connections as per Bones suggestion on Saturday and post the results on here[:D]
