Fuel gauge/warning light question

Hi fellas.

Im nearing the end of my first full tank of fuel on my 944 2.5. The needle is practically on the bottom red line. I have not had the warning light appear as yet and was wondering when this light usually appears?

I dont know at this stage if it is working so I dont want to rely on driving until it appears in case I run out of fuel. [8|]

I know that I could just fill up now but im trying to gauge how many miles I get out of a full tank and could do with topping up at the point at which the warning light appears.

Cheers!

Mine works and (which yours may not) I know I can do a trip to work and then to the petrol station and not run out! Mine's a turbo so will do less to the gallon.
That's about 25 miles.
I think the handbook will have a guide to how much you have left when the light comes on.I suppose there will be some variation from car to car.

The light doesn't come on until the needle is just about to come out the underside of the red line. It's a bit scarey the first time waiting for it to come on and hoping you don't run out []

Once the light comes on you still have two gallons in the tank so 'should' be able to do another 50-60 miles

I'd carry a small petrol tank for a few days just in case your bulb is broken [;)]

If it comes on, it will do so intermittently at first.

This will develop into it intermittently going out.

After a while, it will only go out by putting some fuel in it. How long this state of affairs lasts depends upon your driving style, the weather conditions and how big your cojones are [:D]

(A spare gallon kept in the boot is a good idea until you learn the foibles of your new car!)

Ive also found that the fuel guage needle can fluctuate a fair amount also.....
Indeed it can.

In fact, it once fluctuated between 'top' and 'bottom' within less than 150 miles!

Hi Neil, it was working fine when she was mine [:D] I remember distinctly as she was used in an 80's display in the Metro Centre during October 2007 and I had to prove to them that there was no/very little fuel in the tank whilst in the building so showed them the light on. Fingers crossed it should still be ok [;)]

Cheers again fellas!

I ended up chickening out and refilling before the light come on []

It got dead on the red line and I did not want to risk breaking down on the a19. I will get a 5 litre can and risk going beyond the line next time!

Incidentally it took 62 litres to get the fuel tank full so there must be a decent size reserve it if is an 80 litre tank!

(Having said that immediately after refilling the needle was a fair distance off the top of the gauge)

ps Nick, why did you have to show that there was no fuel in the car ??

I enquired about a car display for a promotion of sunglasses ( I forget which) in the centre outside my practice. They wanted the cars drained of all fluids!!!
I never got around to asking if that mean't brake fluid and coolant!
