Fuel Guage Issue

Had seen a post on this in the past....strange occurrence....had put approx. half a tank full of fuel in and set off, realised a few minutes later that the guage was still showing 'red' and empty! Stopped the car and turned ignition on / off a couple of times and no change.

Worried at this point and decided to add more fuel at another station..... and now all ok! Not sure what to investigate.

That's normal on a C4, C4S, Turbo, or GT3. The tank is saddle-shaped and the level sensor doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the tank. When it gets to about 20 litres from empty it calculates the level from there to empty. Therefore, if you are very low on fuel, and don't add enough to reach the sensor, it still registers empty.

Richard, would this also account for the guage rapidly going to half-tank (sometimes I've only done something like 70 miles at this point) but then dropping more slowly later?

I'm only getting around 180 miles on a tank which I'm finding a little concerning, especially as I don't think I'm being too heavy on the loud pedal. However that's probably off topic here and value for another discussion somewhere else.

Cheers

If you know how many litres you are filling the car with, it should give you an idea of how many are left in the tank when it is reading empty. The workshop manual shows a nominal refill volume of 64 litres, which I assume is the volume between empty and full on the gauge. If it is a long way out then it may be worth getting the instrument cluster recalibrated. This is done with a Porsche tester.

I get about 200 miles to the tank on my normal daily commute across Maidenhead, but a lot more on a run.
